He is a hero in many aspects. Buttercup, on the other hand, made some poor choices. Westley was intelligent. He displayed this characteristic whenhe poisoned the cups of wine. He poisoned both cups to guaranteethat Vizzini, played by Wallace Shawn, one of the kidnappers ofButtercup, died. The intelligence was in the preparation.

Westley hadbuilt up immunity to the poison before so that the small amount didn'taffect him when he drank it, but affected Vizzini. Westley also showed intelligence when he couldn't move, butmade Prince Humperdink believe that he could. Westley just kepttalking to Humperdink until he could get help and Prince Humperdinksurrendered. Westley showed that he made good choices many times. Hisfirst good choice was to love Buttercup.

He chose a girl that trulyloved him in return. He also chose to trust Inigo when he wasclimbing up the cliff. Westley chose not to kill Fezzik and Inigo. Thisproved helpful in defeating Prince Humperdink and his army. Buttercup couldn't see through people like Westley could. Shetrusted Prince Humperdink when he asked her to make a deal withhim.

Humperdink, after telling Buttercup that he was returningWestley to his ship and really imprisoning him, tried to make a dealwith Buttercup. After seeing Buttercup, obviously unhappy, toldButtercup to write four letters to Westley. He said that his fourfastest ships would carry the letters to Westley. If Westley stillwanted to marry Buttercup, the prince would allow that. But, ifWestley didn't come back, he asked Buttercup to think about marryinghim instead.

Buttercup agreed with this. She didn't realize he wastruly scum, until he made a mistake and basically told her that hedidn't send the ships. This was one of her poor choices, trustingPrince Humperdink. Another choice she made was trusting in Westley to come andrescue her from the Prince. This was a good choice, because Westleywas dependable.

The poor decision was not trusting him through theend. Westley promised that nothing would keep them apart. Butwhen shortly before her wedding with Prince Humperdink, Westleywasn't there, Buttercup believed that Westley just wouldn't show up. Westley though, did show up. He saved her from Humperdink, andshowed her that she wasn't legally married to Humperdink. As shown here, Westley and Buttercup were totally different intheir thinking abilities.

Westley thought things through and used hissmarts when he was in trouble. Buttercup believed in things thatwere on the surface. She found it hard to look past the obvious. Even with these differences, they were truly meant to be together.
