Biography: William Shakespeare's Macbeth tells the story of a man who would be king. And he is the king, because he murders. Him and his wife murder to get their way. This works greatly for them, until they are questioned, and their guilt sets in. The task for this paper was to compare the Macbeth's to two people who did great evil to accomplish good. IE: Adolf Hitler and Osama bin Laden, whom were used in this essay.
Evil is to be morally wrong, bad, wicked, and a whole bunch of other synonyms that all boil into one pot. There is so much to this word that it's almost impossible to pinpoint someone as truly evil. To be evil for no other reason than to be evil would be the worst possible evil. Adolf Hitler and Osama bin Laden believe the evil they committed was justified by God, or some higher power.
Macbeth and Lady Macbeth, from the play by Shakespeare, were not evil because they wanted to be, they did it for a greater good. In the play Macbeth and his wife (Lady Macbeth) murder King Duncan and Banquo, Macbeth's good friend, so that Macbeth will become Kind. It could be said that Macbeth becomes more feminine after these murders, for he feels more guilt than his wife; she feels nothing has happened that is wrong, and it is in Macbeth's destiny judged by the witches. Macbeth's femininity is shown in the third Act, when he conjures a hallucination of a ghost of Banquo in his mind, sitting in his chair at the head of the table after Macbeth is crowned Thane of Candor: This shows his guilt is overwhelming him.
He is asked "Are you not a man?" by his wife, further supporting her turn to a hard heart, that of a man's. In the final Act, Lady Macbeth walks the castle naked, sleepwalking, washing her hands (in her mind) to get the blood stains out. She confessed to the murder of Duncan to herself. Her and her husband had reasoning behind their murders, much like Hitler and Bin Laden.
Adolf Hitler and Osama Bin Laden have no remorse, no feelings of regret like Lady Macbeth had. During the Second World War, Hitler sought to create a perfect race, one that did not include Jews, homosexuals, handicapped, or gypsies. Hitler believed in what he needed to do for the good of his country, just like what Macbeth and the Lady felt was good for the country. He was essentially a genius, slowly purging the world of imperfections, one people group at a time.
Osama Bin Laden also has a belief that he is doing right by his God. Since the Al Qaeda were given aid to help purge other terrorist organizations, they " ve lead an uprising, opposing not only America, but any people group that does not believe in what they believe. The most widely discussed and disturbing attack was on September 11 th, 2001, when Bin Laden systematically had 4 airplanes hijacked within a few short hours: two roared into the World Trade Center towers, one into the Pentagon, and one plummeted to rural Pennsylvania soil after a struggle lead by a few brave men. Neither Bin Laden nor Hitler felt guilt because of their pure belief in what they'd done. So why did Macbeth and Lady Macbeth have feelings of regret? Did their minds just go numb with terror of what people might find out or think? Or were Hitler and Bin Laden truly in belief of what they'd done? Maybe our real evil mastermind's wanted fame and to truly be hated.
Macbeth and Lady Macbeth had two men killed to make one man kind. Was this so wrong? Was wanting to better themselves so complex for everyone else to understand? While it seems like a terrible crime, it's only the way the human mind works. Wanting to better one's self image, or to give one a social boost is still too common. Hitler and Bin Laden can be said to have killed for fame and power, but only they would know their hearts. Even the closest to them may not know how they truly feel about something. The Macbeth's on the other hand knew exactly what they wanted, and soon enough, so did everyone else.
The evidence had overwhelmed them and they were doomed to be punished. Who was it that first said that the killings would lead to good though? Lady Macbeth goaded Macbeth on, and he gave in. She was able to manipulate him, just as Hitler was able to, and Bin Laden is still doing. With the power to manipulate comes the power to rule.
With the power to rule comes the power to worsen or end human suffering. The reason there is human suffering in the world is because there is too much evil in the world.
