About 47 per cent of the energy thatthe sun releases to the earth actually reaches theground. About a third is reflected directly backinto space by the atmosphere. The time in whichsolar energy is available, is also the time we leastneed it least - daytime. Because the sun's energycannot be stored for use another time, we need toconvert the suns energy into an energy that can bestored. One possible method of storing solarenergy is by heating water that can be insulated. The water is heated by passing it through hollowpanels. Black-coated steal plates are usedbecause dark colours absorb heat more efficiently. However this method only supplies enough energyfor activities such as washing and bathing. Thesolar panels generate 'low grade' heat, that is,they generate low temperatures for the amount ofheat needed in a day.
In order to generate 'highgrade' heat, intense enough to convert water intohigh-pressure steam which can then be used toturn electric generators there must be anothermethod. The concentrated beams of sunlight arecollected in a device called a solar furnace, whichacts on the same principles as a large magnifyingglass. The solar furnace takes the sunlight from alarge area and by the use of lenses and mirrors canfocus the light into a very small area. Veryelaborate solar furnaces have machines that anglethe mirrors and lenses to the sun all day. Thissystem can provide sizeable amounts of electricityand create extremely high temperatures of over6000 degrees Fahrenheit
Solar energy generatorsare very clean, little waste is emitted from thegenerators into the environment. The use of coal, oil and gasoline is a constant drain, economicallyand environmentally. Will solar energy be thewave of the future? Could the worlds requirementof energy be fulfilled by the 'powerhouse' of ourgalaxy - the sun? Automobiles in the future willprobably run on solar energy, and houses will havesolar heaters.
