Until in 1770 a small group of British soldiers firedon a group of civilians that was harassing them. Some calledit the Boston Massacre, but more levelheaded peoplerealized that it was all accidental.

Even John Adams, a leaderof the resistance argued in favor of the soldiers in court.Good sense prevailed and a compromise had been reachedwith Parliament yet again. The Americansthought the Tea Act was a bribe the people into paying theduty for tea indirectly wh! ich would show weakness andleav e them open to more taxes and duties. In three out offour of the ports the tea was refused and sent back but theGovernor of Boston Thomas Hutchinson wanted the tea toreach Boston. So he did all he could to see the tea reach theharbor. The tea act had brought the resistance back to life.The Boston Tea Party was the beginning of the end toEnglish rule in the Colonies. The Americans had gone too far. In response tothis Parliament closed down the port of Boston and beganthe Coercive Acts. The Coercive acts were a number oflaws passed to limit the government of Massachusetts. Inthese laws was stated that the Governor was allowed to pickhis own council instead of having them elected along withalso being able to do the same with the judicial system, suchas judges and lawyers. Above all, town meetings werebanned except to elect the local statesman.

Parliament hadhoped that this would isolate Massachusetts and use them asan example to all the other colonies who had plans to rebelagainst the mother country. But these did not put down thefeelings of revolt inside the people. It sparked them to ahigher level making the Americans feel as if that was whatwas going to happen to all of the colonies in the near future.So in response to the Coercive Acts in December of 1774the colonies each sent delegates to the First ContinentalCongress in Philadelphia to protest. The new governor ofMass. Gen. Thomas Cage, decided to abolish the assemblyfor it would do nothing but protest everything.

But therevolutionary ideas were running too thick for them to bestopped so the assembly refused to disband and continuedto meet, but now called the Provincial Congress. Their mainpurpose was to declare the colony's rights and to enforce thenonimportation agreement, but it soon assumed the form ashadow government. All taxes were now flowing into theCongress and not the official treasury. It began to warntowns to get their militias' ready and to take up the collectionof arms. Although Governor Cage was a modest man wholiked to keep the peace this outraged him.

He looked theother way occasionally while the government was formingbut when he had heard about a cache of arms being help 21miles out of Boston at Concord he went crazy. Fearing forthe government he sent troops there to destroy it. On April18 the troops left Boston on a basic mission that wouldbegin the revolution. A few miles up the road theyencountered a small militia and shots began to fly. Then atconcord there was even more resistance.

Seeing that theywere outnumbered the British began to retreat. Therevolution had started. There were still three basic causes forthe war: the taxes, the Coercive Acts and the placement oftroops in America. If not for the ignorant Parliament passinglaws without thinking of consequence there probablywouldn't of been a war and it could of been peaceful maybeeven stayed a colony until this very day. A month after thefirst shots had been fired the Second Continental Congressmet in May 1775 in Philadelphia .

Some of the delegateshoped to compromise with Britain but others wantedindependence from the mother country. Finally on July 4,1776 , the delegates agreed on a Declaration ofIndependence that explained the reasons for their separationfrom Britain. Many believe that the Declaration ofIndependence is one of the most important and influentialpieces of work in American history. Not only because itprotected natural rights such as ' life ,liberty and the pursuitof happiness' but also it explained reason for separationfrom Britain . The main purpose in the document called the'Declaration of Independence' which was set out briefly andwith supreme eloquence the fundamental premises ofAmerican nation hood. Also the document protected thecolonies independence, the countries right to form alliancesand to prepare a plan for a confederation.

Although thisrevolution seems, on the outside, that it was for change itwas mostly to keep things the way they were. Withouthaving to pay new taxes or having to change to be ruled byEngland. A leading historian once said, 'A salient feature ofour Revolution was that its animating purpose was deeplyconservative. The colonials revolted against British rule inorder to keeps things the way they were, not to initiate anew era.' We agree with this completely. Instead ofaccepting change as it came.

Every bit of change fromBritain was challenged in America by revolutionists and evenLoyalists. All the new taxes no matter if they were good orbad were hated. Then again there is always the taxationwithout representation saying. That is true but they still didnot want to be represented that was the last thing theywanted. They wanted local government and taxation like itwas before the Seven Years War.

The driving force behindthe war was the continuing effort to keep thin! gs that sameand not different. But after the war they were not preparedfor the drastic changes that would come about. But we stillgot out independence from England and now have the mostpowerful, successful country in the world.
