Since that time there have been over 50 United Nations peacekeeping missions. Each mission has faced a variety of challenges. Over time and as a result of these different experiences, the concept of peacekeeping has evolved.Peacekeeping has traditionally been a mainly military activity but Canadian involvement in international peace operations has expanded. Canadian peace support efforts include such groups as the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), Elections Canada and Corrections Services Canada.
This takes place not just through the United Nations but also through organizations such as the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). Canada has a long and proud history in United Nations peace support operations and has participated in most UN missions since the start of peacekeeping in 1948. In addition to Canadian involvement in UN peace support operations, about 2,305 Canadian Forces personnel are participating in other operations. According to the United Nations monthly summary, of October 31 2002, Canada is the 32nd largest provider of military troops to the UN. As of November 2002, there are approximately 216 Canadian Forces personnel deployed with the UN peace support operations.
The United Nations has the potential to help a lot of the world. With all of the programs and organizations they have. The only problem is that they are on a limited budget and they need more money to help the less fortunate people in the world. If they could get more funding they could do more to help.Now the United Nations do the best they can, with the little money they have. Their yearly budget is the same as the government of Newfoundland.
