This disease can cause a lot of damage to the body such as slowed heart rate, lowered body temperature and blood pressure, premature bone loss, loss of menstruation or irregular periods, change in body hair, grayish or yellowish skin and mood changes. In my mind, I felt that in order to be accepted I needed to be thinner and felt that the only way to do this was to diet and exercise. My parents intervened when they saw that my diet and exercise had become a problem. By listening to them, I was able to overcome my fears and beliefs with their help and on my own. This is a perfect example of how society and people can influence your perceptions of body image. Negative body images can lead to lowered self esteem, which in turn, could contribute to an eating disorder.

Eating disorders can be overcome. Numerous options for treatment of eating disorders exist. Some of those include counseling, medications and treatment facilities. People can learn how to cope with their eating disorder and live a long and healthy life..
