1881: Pablo Ruiz Picasso was born on October 25, 1881, in Malaga, Spain, Son of Jose Ruiz B lasco, an art teacher (1838-1913) and Maria Picasso Lopez (1855- 1939) 1884: Birth of the first sister, Dolores (Lola) 1887: Birth of the second sister, Concepcion (Conchita) 1888 / 89: Started painting tutored by his father. 1891: Translated La Coru~na, where his father worked as an art teacher. He started to paint. in subtle pinks and grays, often highlighted with brighter tones. His interested in sculpture and his new enthusiasm for black art are reflected in the transitional painting' Two Nudes:' 1907: Picasso painted 'Demoiselles d Avignon', considered the watershed picture of the twentieth century, and met Georges Braque, the other leading figure of the cubist movement. The first full blown example of analytical Cubism-an attempt to render three-dimensions without resorting to perspective.

1908: Picasso joined with Braque and other like-minded artist to explore the representation of three-dimensional objects on a two- dimensional surface by means of overlapping planes. 1909: Its exclusive emphasis on formal, geometrical criteria contrasted sharply with the cult of colour espoused by the fauvists, of whom Braque was one before joining forces with Picasso in 1909. 1910: This early phase of the cubist movement, often called analytical cubism, is exemplified in the painting Ambrose Vol lard and the sculpture Woman's hade. 1911: He found that those fragments of naturalistic pictorial space and forms that remained were becoming less and less apparent. 1912: He Braque, and Juan Gris were introducing real materials such as chairs caning and wall paper-either the actual materials or painted facsimiles-into their works in what came to be know as collage.
