To better yourself as a reader, writer, and thinker. To write an analytical paper based on literature. TOPIC: Choose one of the following topics and write an analytical paper about the short stories we have read for this class. Option One: Consider the treatment of a common subject, i.
e. isolation, violence, love, mental instability, in two or three assigned stories. Discuss the impact of this subject on the protagonist of each story. Option Two: Select a short story assigned in this unit. Identify and discuss various symbols found in the story and relate how these symbols help to support (or even create) a specific theme. Option Three: Select a short story assigned in this unit.
Identify and discuss the uses of irony found in the story and relate how irony helps to support characterization or a specific theme (do not discuss both characterization and specific theme) AUDIENCE: I am your audience. I have read the stories so you do not need to discuss plot. LENGTH & FORMAT: All papers are to be word processed in MLA format with a Works Cited page (one-inch margins, Times New Roman 12 pt. Font, title, ect. ) First Draft: Your first draft should be no shorter than two pages and include a thesis statement in order to receive any credit. Your first draft MUST be turned in before the due date of the Final Draft.
Your first draft is worth 15 points. An incomplete (short) or no draft at all is worth zero points. Final Draft: Your final draft should be no shorter than three full pages in length. Your final draft must be received at 11: 00 pm in order to be considered "on time." For each day late, I must deduct one letter grade. The final draft is worth 75 points. EVALUATION: Your essay will be evaluated on content (level of thought), writing ability (coherent, cohesive structure), command of Standard Written American English, thesis with supporting your claim, proper paragraph form, MLA format.
