The murder of her boyfriend also leads her to believe that she will never find true love in a man again. The only person left in Justice's life that she can depend on is her grandmother.

When her grandmother dies, she is not only left a big empty house, but also with the burden of being alone. She begins to wear only black and begins to keep to herself, shutting out the outside world. Avoiding friends and keeping to herself, the only way for her to cope with her depression is by composing poetry. Her poetry seems to be the only thing in life that keeps her going. It provides her with an outlet for her loneliness. Justice becomes content, if not comfortable, with her life of solitude until she meets and unexpected way out of her pain.

On her way to a convention in Oakland, she is forced to ride with an independent-minded postal worker whom she has not gotten along with in the past. After agreeing to ride with Lucky on the journey from Los Angeles to Oakland Justice grows in more ways than she ever could have imagined. Various arguments between them and their friends brings the two of them closer together. Lucky and Justice begin to discover that their thoughts on violence, socially and domestically, are the same. Justice finally feels that she is not as alone as before. The relation that forms between Lucky and Justice sparks a long overdue healing process in Justice.

She learns that she does not have to be alone in life and that all she has to do is allow herself to love again. A change is clearly seen in Justice, as she begins to wear white, a strong contrast to the dark and lonely looking black wardrobe that she usually wears. As a result a the chance meeting with Lucky, Justice's life is drastically changed, and she is once again able to love.
