Can Women and Men Be Friends? - Watching! ^0 When Harry Met Sally! +/- and! ^0 My Best Friend!'s Wedding! +/- Can women and men be! ^0 just! +/- friends?

This question has been around for as long as men and women have coexisted on the face of the earth; yet no one succeeded in giving a firm answer to this long-sought question. Ever since we were old enough to recognize the biological difference between male and female, we have been trying to some how define this delicate, fragile relationship between the two sexes. Opinions vary, of course. And the two most famous movies that were based on this very idea, ! ^0 My Best Friend!'s Wedding! +/- suggests two different answers.! ^0 Men and women can never be friends because the sex part always gets in the way, ! +/- says Harry Burns.

He is one of the main characters in the famous romantic comedy movie! ^0 When Harry Met Sally.! +/- This movie, which was made in 1989, is a story about relationship between its two main characters, Sally and Harry. When they first meet, Harry states the famous line about men and women not being able to be friends. However, as the years go by Sally and Harry gradually become close. They come to a point when they can share with each other the deepest thoughts they have (ie: sexual fantasy).

In other words, they became true friends. The movie seemed to have capsized its original answer to the question (men and women can! t be friends); however, like Harry says they end up having sex. Though the movie ends as a happy ending with them getting married, it not only failed to prove that friendship between the two sexes is possible but further on entrenched the idea that women and men can! t be true friends. There is another movie approaching the same question, but with a slightly different answer, !

+/-. The main character Julianne Potter, a 27-year-old women who is about to turn 28 on her next birthday, gets a call one day from her best male! (R) friend! Michael O! Neal, that he is getting married.

They were together for a short period of time in college, and later decided to stay friends. They had a pact to get married to each other if neither of them finds a soul mate until they turn 28. As she hears of his marriage, she realizes that she had loved him and decided to stop the wedding. This movie seems to suggest that women and men cannot be friends. The feelings Julianne had for Michael were not those of a friendship but of love, though she convinced herself that they were only friends. However, as she goes on trying the ruin the wedding, she constantly feels strings of uneasiness.

At the end of the movie, she realizes that she cared so much about her! (R) friend! to ruins his happiness. This ending suggests that regardless of sex, two people can really care about each other with genuine affection without engaging in a! (R) romantic relationship.! In the movie, though Julianne failed in getting Michael!'s love, she is happy for her friend!'s sake. We are all aware of the fact that no resolute answer exists on this matter.

However, as I was watching these movies that deal with the same topic, I found out one common concept that the two movies have as its base. That is, the idea that women and men are different. The two movies, more or less, were focused on showing the differences between a man and a woman thus drawing to a conclusion that the two sexes can never really unite. The movie! ^0 When Harry Met Sally! +/- dwells upon this issue throughout the whole scene. Sally is the typical!

(R) picky! Miss Hospital Corners. Harry on the other hand, is the funny, low-maintenance guy who goes sleeping around with women. This portrays the typical image of gender characters that the society have. Movie goes on, to talk about how men and women react differently in relationships, or after having sex.

The problem is, the movie does not take these characteristics to be of personal difference, but of gender difference. (note that I used the word gender and not sex) The movie! ^0 My Best Friend!'s Wedding! +/- seems to start off in a! (R) new! way. The main character Julianne is not the typical perky, lovely girl waiting to fall in love with prince charming. However, the women that Michael actually falls in love with falls to the exact category of that. So, ironically, this movie even seem to be implying that in order to get a man!'s love we have to act and be a certain way.

I came to the conclusion that the idea that men and women cannot be friends is drilled into our minds only because we are so conscious of our gender differences. Surely they are different. But then again, we all are. Everyone has their own distinctive quality, and those qualities cannot be put under the name of! ^0 men! +/- or! ^0 women.! +/-.
