I, am here today to inform you on how institutionalized slavery came to an end.
Now let " stalk about how this happened. In the 1700's Britian emerges as a superpower. A. Industrial Power and B. Naval Power (military) The British Industrial Revolution was the height of technology. British productivity was ahead of the rest of the world by a large amount. Thus making it an economic world power. So how did the Industrial Revolution loosen the grip of slavery? The answer, technology was becoming more efficient than slavery.
Before technology, it would take a lot of slave labor to make x amount of widgets. Now with technology, a small amount of labor could make more widgets than that of massive slave labor. Technology made slavery less efficient, and at the same time, technology created a new class of people. The huge number of products being produced had to be sold by a merchant class (middle class). Before the Industrial (I.R.) there was no real middle class. 97% were poor, 2% middle, and 1% wealthy.
Now with the I.R. we have a large middle class, like never seen before in the history of the world. The I.R. also allows for lea sure time. Maslow theory of needs (number 1) is survival. So before the I.R. the largest class of people were poor. Their only concern was survival and nothing else. Now with the I.R. you have a middle class with leisure time.
Now one has time for education, with education come communication which led's to the exchange of ideas, with the ex-changed of ideas, bring about a form of freedom of speech, and from here rise abolitionist. Now you have people who are sympathetic towards others. The middle class is now able to be sympathetic towards other, because they are not worried about their immediate survival. Now let me switch gears and talk about Britain naval power. The sun never sets on the British Empire. The British had the most powerful navy in the world.
Britains navy had the ability to con-tro l trade and communication. Thus, Britian had the ability to control the shipping industry, with the blockades of harbors or confiscation of ships on the high seas, this gave Britian the ability to indirectly control governments. Countries who wanted good trade economies had to please Britian. So with the combination of industrial and naval power, Britain brings an end to the slave trade (not slavery). The slave trade was no longer needed because of the efficiency of the I.R., no more slaves were needed.
So in 1807 Britain outlawed the slave trade, which was enforced by its navy. Britains forced other countries to live by it's laws. The government did this for 2 reasons 1. a bol-it ions 2. greed, the government figured out away to profit from it's legislation, through confiscation. Any ship on the high seas with slaves, gave Britian justification to take everything. Thus, filling the royal crowns treasury. So individuals and / or governments involved in the slave trade, decided to change their practices.
In 1832 Britain outlaws slavery. The government paid 20 million pounds to all British slave holders. Britian ended slavery for 2 reasons. 1. abolition's 2. greed, knowing that the slaves would now be consumers and tax payers, thus boosting the. Never the less, for the 1st time in history, a country outlaws slavery and enforces that law. In conclusion, technology ended institutionalized slavery by giving freedom to human physical con-straits, with technology slavery was now less efficient. Technology also allowed the middle class the leisure time to be sympathetic towards others, and the British navy enforced the law.
