What if you could give parents a chance to have a baby that would otherwise be impossible, or end starvation, save an endangered species, or even create independent organs from a single cell to help a diseased person, cloning could make those ideas possible A. Although cloning has been a hot topic in the last four years or so, forms of cloning have existed for nearly half a century. II. I will attempt to persuade you that cloning and its forms are very important for the future. Body I. The history of cloning began long ago, but has only come to the world's eye in the last few years. A. Contrary to what most think cloning has been around for almost half a century. 1. In 1952 the first successful cloning experiment took place when scientists for Cancer Research in Philadelphia cloned a frog tadpole using a nucleus of the frogs embryo.

2. Then in 1962 John Gurdon of Cambridge University was the first to clone toads using a nucleus of a tadpole's intestinal cell, which survived into adulthood and reproduced. 3. Later in 1981 Steen Willadsen of Cambridge combined sheep and goat embryos to create the first artificial animal, which they named a geek, which has the body and shape of a goat but with sheep wool.

4. In 1986 Willadsen transplanted the embryonic nuclei from cattle and produced the first cloned calves. 5. Then in 1987 James Roll of the University of Massachusetts was the first to clone rabbits. B. In the recent years scientists have produced clones of more complex animals all over the world. 1. About 4 years ago the cloned sheep Dolly made headlines across the globe, which lead to an outbreak of many more experiments.

2. The next big success came when experiments at Oregon Health Sciences University produced the first cloned primate, a monkey named Tetra. 3. Even more recently the creators of Dolly produced 5 piglets.

These pigs raise hopes for transplants. II. Cloning humans and animals could change the way the world works and thinks. A. For many couples having trouble having children cloning would be a good alternative. 1. Although for most people, cloning themselves would be a last chance to have a child. 2.

It could be a couple having problems getting pregnant or a single person wanting to leave something before they die. B. With recent successes of cloning, endangered species could become a thing of the past. 1. If it is possible to clone sheep, rabbits, frogs, and monkeys what is stopping us from producing endangered species like rhinos and tigers. 2.

And back in 1962 they were able to make a clone that was able to reproduce they would only have to make a few animals and let them loose. 3. Steps further than that would be to bring back already extinct animals, in a sort of Jurassic Park way. 4.

Recently, a wooly mammoth was discovered with fur and all, so they could possibly retrieve the DNA from that and create a once extinct species. C. Another way cloning could improve the world is through the food supply. 1. Once cloning has been perfected it could be possible to create massive amounts of cows or pigs. 2. These animals could be used to drive food prices way down and to feed starving countries. 3.

This may seem a bit drastic, but it is not too different from breeding pigs on farms that would simply meet the butcher.. Some scientists believe that creating human's organs for medical uses would be unethical. A. A group of Japanese scientists were able to create independent body parts of animals. 1. The most famous example of this is in Japan where scientists were able to create independent frog eyes and ears. 2. This would be great for transplants for diseased or injured body organs, and this is what the Japanese scientists did.

3. They created a frog kidney and successfully transplanted it into a frog. B. The ability to create organs on demand would be revolutionary for the medical field. 1. This would make it possible for the replication of any organ for use. 2.

It could turn life-threatening diseases into simple annoyances. 3. Once you found out you are sick you can go in and get the transplant. 4. For example if you find out you have liver cancer then they could take uninfected cells, let them grow then do the transplant. 5.

This is a much better choice than waiting on the grim hope of somebody else dying. Conclusion I. In conclusion, cloning is becoming more and more valid of a choice for many things. II. You can feed people easily, help couples have a baby, save endangered species, or create transplants.. So someday you may have your life elongated due to the one of the many forms of cloning.
