The American Civil Liberties Union of Northern California The ACLU's purpose is to protect all people's civil liberties. Even if the person doesn't have in money. The ACLU NC was founded in 1934 during the General Strike to protect striking longshoremen from Police brutality. This chapter of the ACLU is based in San Francisco.

Now days the ACLU is involved of some one the most important issues of today, such as reproductive rights, immigration, abolishment of the death penalty, and Gay and Lesbian rights. The ACLU is almost constantly fighting the state of California to protect the rights of people they believe have had their civil liberties infringed upon. If it weren't for the ACLU, the Government would most definitely not enforce the Bill of Rights or the Constitution when it favored their views. The ACLU's main focus is to serve minorities interests because it is their job to protect the civil liberties of all people and it is more likely for minorities to have their civil liberties taken away or infringed upon. Once recent action that the ACLU NC was involved in was suing the government for only allowing US citizens to be airport screeners, although most of these jobs were filled with non-citizens before 9/11. When the Government took over airport security a law was passed that only US citizens could be considered for the job.

A Judge in Southern California ruled that the qualified non-citizens most be allowed to be hired or stay in their old jobs. The ACLU NC has also educated many people what their rights are and what they can do when being questioned by authorities, especially in the post 9/11 world. People of Middle Eastern background must know more then ever that they have rights and civil liberties. The ACLU is a very powerful special interest group because they have always have had a reputation for fighting for peoples rights. Plus the ACLU has highly skilled lawyers, which prevent policy makers from becoming to loose on civil liberty. The ACLU's job is to basically check that nothing passed in any government agency affects a person's god given rights.

The ACLU keeps policy makers in check. The main reason why the ACLU has been able to gain so much power and authority is because they win cases, they have always been known for going to bat for clients and then winning the case. If it was not for the ACLU there would be no rights for Gay's and Lesbians, abortion would be illegal, not to mention schools in the south would probably still be segregated. Most importantly the ACLU of NC does not charge any thing for their services. Making sure that everyone who needs their services can get them.
