The infamous occurrence that transpires on the subway shows the suggestibility of people makes them easy targets for manipulation. As the advertisement for 'Denham's Dentrifice'; resounds throughout the cramped cabin, the reader is confronted with the horrifying experience of how the torrent of words was recreated on the passengers' lips (78-80). This event exposes how advances in information technology, making it a passive form of spreading information, can easily negatively affect the populace when used with devious intentions.

Perhaps technology even becomes the deity of such a civilization when its immoral applications destroy the previous Gods. Yet again, the model citizen of Beatty states, 'Forget them. Burn all, burn everything. Fire is bright and fire is clean'; (60). When religion and all other prior commitments are eradicated because of technology, one wonders what their worshipping shall fall upon. In essence, advances in machinery and science can prove to possess malicious functions when they are in the use of domineering cultures that have only one view of perfection.

In Ray Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451, literature, which is an active communication technology because one has to willingly extract the information, becomes outperformed by the passive communication technologies of radio and television. These passive communication technologies force propaganda onto the populace because they freely spout the government's views. With the aid of the concealing instrument, the flamethrower, the government in Bradbury's fictional nation destroys the true chronicles and displays the information through mediums they control. Like all satirists, Bradbury brings up a flaw in modern society and exaggerates it. However, the message reverberates loud and clear. Principally, Bradbury seeks for the populace to question all information fed to them and 'wake their mind up'; , so to speak.

By showing the possible corrupt uses of technology, Bradbury emphasizes that free speech and free press are human rights that are necessary for individuality that ever single person needs. Having been written in 1951, Fahrenheit 451 fails to address some of the information technologies of this time period. A concept, such as the Internet which links millions of computers together to spread information quickly, was too extraordinary for the time period. Had Bradbury wrote in this era, he would warn against control of the internet, or even a world where computers are burned. Such a powerful information technology could support the government since the internet could spread propaganda faster and easier; or hurt it, since the same computers could spread the truth faster and easier. Thus, information technologies are double-edged swords that act as either advocates for truth and justice, or champions of oppression and totalitarianism.
