Alcoholic Drinks Industry example essay topic

INTENTION My intention for my text production exposition is to write a formal exposition on whether the sale of alcohol should be prohibited. The audience that my exposition is aimed at includes young adults and the general drinking population, which may include some late-teenagers and anyone older. The language used is formal and is therefore not aimed at children or early teenagers. In deciding whether the sale of alcohol should be banned it is necessary to examine a number of arguments both for and against the sale of alcohol before making a decision. In almost all countries in the world, adults are allowed to buy and consume alcohol with very little restriction, whereas other drugs such as cannabis, cocaine, ecstasy, acid, and heroin are illegal to be consumed or have possession of. To be able to make a decision on the sale of alcohol, the positives and negatives will need to be assessed, the ways in which people will be affected by the banning of alcohol will need to be considered.

To take alcoholic drinks away from the world would create a void in the lives of people everywhere. The main reason why alcohol is different from other drugs is that alcohol is a social drug which can be used safely if in moderation. Alcohol, unlike other drugs, is socially entrenched. It is an important part of the social life and culture of most countries and try to ban it is completely impractical.

If alcohol is taken from clubs and pubs there will be business loss and the vibe or atmosphere that these venues create will be lost and become a thing of the past. Alcohol can be used as an icebreaker between people and enables people to become more comfortable and accept situations. In selling alcohol, premises expect that consumers will act responsibly and be able to control their actions. For people to get drunk or wasted is not acceptable and takes the fun away for other people, but as long as people drink in moderation, there is no reason why the sale of alcohol should be banned. When talking about drinking responsibly, alcohol is always blamed for brawls in bars and people who drink too much are more likely to start fights or become a victim. But human beings are naturally inclined towards violence and conflict.

Sex and violence are primal parts of our genetic make-up and alcohol isn't needed to bring them to the surface. At worst, alcohol slightly exaggerates these tendencies - but that makes it the occasion not the underlying cause of violent crimes. The underlying causes are biological and social. Making rape and murder illegal does not eradicate rape and murder, so it is unlikely that making drinking alcohol illegal will do so either. Drink driving has always been a problem and will always exist unfortunately until alcohol is eradicated. In recent times the progress made against drink driving has been very encouraging, television campaigns and random breath testing has discouraged drink driving and we should continue to campaign against drink driving and have every reason to hope that the current trend towards its eradication by a process of attitude-change will continue.

But the fact that there are still some injuries and deaths is not a good enough reason to take away the civil liberties of the vast majority of law-abiding citizens by depriving them of the pleasure of drinking alcohol. Not only would banning alcohol infringe people's civil liberties to an unacceptable degree, it would also put thousands of people out of work. The alcoholic drinks industry is an enormous global industry with hundreds of different factories in each country that all rely on the sale and consumption of alcohol to remain a successful part of the global business market. If the sale of alcohol was to be prohibited millions upon millions of people would become jobless which could easily send the economy into a downturn which could result in a depression. There are not good enough reasons for wreaking this havoc on the world economy. Currently governments raise large amounts of revenue from taxes and duties payable on alcoholic drinks.

To ban alcohol would take away a major source of funding for public services, this money would now be gone and the government would have to find this needed money in other areas, this could increase taxes on substitutes for alcohol which could mean rising prices on other drinks. In addition, the effect of banning alcohol would call for additional policing on a huge scale. If the prohibition were to be enforced effectively it would create a new class of illegal drug-users, traffickers, and dealers on an unprecedented scale. In summary, it is obvious that the banning of alcohol would not be a wise decision and would leave a lot of responsible drinkers unhappy and thirsting for something extra in their lives. On the other hand there will always be people who go too far and will be the ones causing fights and drink driving. But considering this, it is still not reason enough to ban the sale of alcohol because of the industry that will be destroyed, the people who will be left jobless and the good-people who want to drink responsibly and have a good time down at the local pub or club with their friends.
