Algeria Ryan Elliott The earliest recorded inhabitants of Algeria were Berber-speaking people. Algeria was originally inhabited by Berbers until the Arabs conquered North Africa in the 7th century. Staying mainly in the mountainous regions, the Berbers resisted the spreading Arab influence, managing to preserve much of their language and culture until the present day. They make up some 30% of the total population. Since then Arab and European people have been the other ethnicity's living there.

Almost all Algerians are adherents of the Sunni Muslim faith, the state religion. Farming is concentrated in the valleys and basins of the north and in the oases of the Sahara. The main crops are wheat, barley, oats, citrus fruit, wine grapes, olives, tobacco, figs, and dates. Algeria is also an important producer of cork. Sheep, poultry, goats, and cattle are raised, and there is a small fishing industry. Petroleum and natural gas, found mainly in the East Sahara, are Algeria's most important mineral resources.

In 1830 Algeria was conquered by the French, who gave it the status of a department in its own right.
