There are many reasons that America is great. In fact, that it is very difficult to narrow these down into categories, much less, five specific characteristics. In my opinion, a few things that make America great are the freedoms we have, our unique government, our amazing pastimes, the great educational opportunities our country offers, and last, but definitely not least, the Great American Hot Dog. In America, we have the freedom to live our lives pretty much any way that we like, as long as we do not cause harm to others.

These are called our civil rights. The most common rights we have are freedom of speech, religion, and press, as stated in the First Amendment of our Nation's Constitution. These three freedoms give us so much more than we acknowledge. In many countries, you can be thrown into jail or even killed for speaking out against someone. If all countries had religious freedom, there would be fewer martyrs dying by standing up against their governments strict national religion laws.

For example, in Pakistan in 1997, a 17 year old girl and her 18 year old sister, were put on trial, and then put to death for sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Thousands of martyrs die yearly throughout the world for standing up for their religious beliefs against their governments. The press in other countries is often not even tolerated, or is dictated by the government. America has a wonderfully unique government. You can search the world over and not find a government as great as America's.

The systems of checks and balances, separation of powers, and limited authority guarantees that no one branch of our government has too much power. The documents that our nation is founded on are amazing also. The Declaration of Independence established our freedom from British Rule. Another important document in our nation's history is The United States Constitution. This document is made up of twelve articles and twenty-seven amendments which state how our government works and explains our rights as Americans.

As we moved into the modern era, we became a nation of pastimes. So many great events have come origins in our country that are now internationally known. Athletics in America are among the best in the world. This is primarily because of the enthusiasm expressed by Americans. Most every American has a favorite sport from baseball, basketball and football to horse racing, tennis or golf. It is also evident that if you want to become a major recording artist, you need to come to America.

Some of the most popular musicians of all time, originated in other countries then came to America to achieve fame. The best example is The Beetles. Motion pictures originated in America. Since then, movie theaters have been appearing everywhere in the world.

Some of the most famous American movies are based on great American novels such as To Kill a Mockingbird and Gone With the Wind. Education is encouraged for all people in America. Indeed many children begin even in infancy. Now I would like to talk about our nations awesome education system. There are thousands of institutions for higher learning available in the United States.

American's are internationally known for being among the smartest in the world. The national literacy rate in the united states is 97 percent, which is among the worlds highest. Education is made available to everyone in the United States. Finally, I would like to support my personal favorite subject that makes America such a great nation, The Great American Hot Dog.

The hot dog is without a doubt America's signature food. I would venture to claim there are very few places in this country you could go and not be able to find a restaurant that sells hot dogs. You can find a hot dog at any major event you attend even concerts and seminars, and of course all sports venues. To be quite frank, no pun intended, a hot dog keeps America simple.

When you go to a baseball game, and you see a kid get a hot dog from the concession stand, you rarely see a frown. America is without a doubt the best country in the world. It may be a biased opinion, and so be it. Considering things such as our freedoms, our government, our educational system, our pastimes, and the Great American hot dog. America will always remain the greatest country in the world.
