The Island of the Blue Dolphins is an island in the Pacific that looks like a big fish. It is a very windy island. The worst thing about the island were the wild dogs which lived there. Around this island blue dolphins swim and other sea life including otters and sea elephants play. Long ago an Indian Tribe lived on this island. They formed a village named Ghalas-at.

Their leaders name was Chief Chowig. Chief Chowig had three children. The oldest daughter named Ula pe, a daughter named Wonapalei (who secretly called herself Karana) who was age 24 and a son Ramo who was age 12. One day as the children were at a little harbor of the island named Coral Cove an Aleut (which means Eskimo native) ship arrived with a Russian Captain named Captain Orlov and forty of his men. They came to hunt sea otter. They worked out an arrangement with the Indian Chief to let them stay on the island to hunt sea otter and in return they would give the Indians their share and many goods.

The chief warned everyone in the village to stay away from the Russian camp. He believed that they would not profit by befriending them. He said the Russians are people who do not understand friendship and that they were people of the same tribe that caused trouble many years ago. This being said, the Indians stayed away from the Aleut camp. The Aleuts came back every year at about the same time to hunt the sea otters. One year the Aleuts tried to leave without giving the Indian tribe anything.

The Tribe tried to stop the Aleuts. A war broke out and many Indians were killed including Chief Chowig. That night was the most terrible time in all of the memory of the Ghalas-at. The Indians appointed a new leader named Chief Kinki. Eventually he arranged for a ship of white men to come and take the Indian tribe away to a new safe place. When the ship arrived and set sail Ramo was left behind by accident.

Karana tried to get them to stop and wait for her brother but they would.
