In this article Mr. Krueger confronts the issue of discrimination in hiring and the government acts to help with equal opportunity hiring. Through out the article Mr. Krueger sites studies showing the impact of laws providing for the equal opportunities of minorities from the early 70's to present day to present day. Its is shown that average salary and wages gaps have grown from the 70's and are now starting to widen in present day. There are also different ideas for ways to help to narrow the gap once again with modifications to the labor acts and hiring laws. Alan B. Krueger is the Bend heim professor of Economics and Public Affairs at Princeton University. He is also the editor of the journal or Economic Perspectives.
Mr. Krueger's argument shows clear evidence that in the early 70's laws where needed to help minorities with discrimination, and that the laws did have some success. Later in the article he continues to talk about how the laws are having less of and effect on the discrimination towards minorities and the average salary gap is widening once again. But Mr. Krueger does not address changes in the equal opportunities act's that have taken place in recent times, such as states changing laws pertaining to affirmative action. Which would no doubt have an impact in the wage gaps but not necessarily the discrimination of minorities. It is possible that over the time period that these laws where strict and had a enormous benefit on the opportunities to minorities, the standards where lowered for the minorities by companies fearing lawsuits and other legal action. Mr. Krueger also only focuses on African-Americans as the minorities sighting the narrowing and the growth of the salary gaps.
Its was not taken into account the overwhelming influx of population our country has seen, which has lead to many minorities other then African-Americans. The study failed to look at the benefit to minorities as a whole and focused on one group as opposed to the whole.
