The important things that a tiger needs are shade, food, and water. The average adult male tiger weighs up to 420 pounds and are 9 feet long, including a 3- foot tail. The average adult female tiger weighs up to 300 pounds and are 8 feet long. The fur of a tiger can be from brownish- yellow to orange-red. All tigers are marked with black stripes.
The throat, belly, and inside the legs has white fur. The White tiger has an all-white fur coat with either chocolate- brown or black stripes. These tigers are distinctive because their eyes are blue and all other tiger's eyes are yellow. White tigers are rare in the wild. More than 100 of them live in zoos. If tigers mate with lions and they produce an offspring, the offspring would be called ligers and tigons.
Adult tigers usually live on their own, not because they are unfriendly but they like roaming alone. Adult males may claim their territory from 10 to 20 square miles. The male tigers claim their territory by marking trees with their scent or urine. This tells other tigers the territory is occupied. A tiger's roar can be heard for up to 2 miles.
A female tiger can bear her first cubs at age 31/2 to 4 years old. She holds the cubs for 31/2 months and then gives birth from 1 to 6 cubs. Tiger cubs are helpless and can weigh up to 2 to 3 pounds. Plus they are really playful. Tiger cub's lives depend on its mother for food until they are 1 years old. At 1 year old they are still not able to kill large animals but they are able to kill smaller animals.
When the cubs are about 2 years old they become fully independent. Female cubs settle down in a close by territory near their mother. Male cubs tend to settle away from its mother. If fortunate, tigers can live up to 20 years old. If in the earlier days people didn't reduce the number of tigers by killing them, there would be lots more tigers in the world. Scientists have recognized 8 different varieties of tigers.
Of the 8 varieties, 3 have become extinct, and 3 other's are seriously endangered. Several countries in the world, like India and Nepal, protect tigers in nature reserves. In zoos, it is easier to breed and raise tigers. Most of the zoo visitors come to see the tiger cubs. Adult tigers are sometimes trained to become circus performers.
