You have no money C. This is what life is like for many Americans each day. Today I would like to encourage you to donate your time or money to help fight the homeless epidemic in our nation. (Transition: Let's start by taking a closer look at the homeless problem in America) Need I. Homelessness effects many different kinds of people A. According to National Coalition for the Homeless last year over three million people were homeless 1. Statistics show that people living in poverty are most likely to become homeless.
2. Economically they are at a high risk of losing what little they already have. 3. The average age of a homeless person is mid to upper thirties. B. Homelessness affects families 1. The number of homeless families has significantly increased over the past decade. 2.
They are among the fastest growing segments of the homeless population 3. They are approximently 40% of people who are homeless. 4.50% of homeless adults were also homeless as children C. Homelessness affects veterans 1. It is estimated that 1/3 of the homeless are veterans. II.
Why are these people homeless? A. I asked my friend his opinion and he replied, "It's their own fault. They do it to themselves by being lazy or with their drug habits". 1. Typically people have the impression that homeless people are sloppy, lazy, and irresponsible.
2. Many people believe the homeless should help themselves by getting jobs. 3. People also believe that drug habits have caused people to become homeless. B. A survey in 30 cities by the U.S. Conference of Mayors in 1998 found that almost 1/5 homeless people are employed. 1. Many homeless people who have jobs and are not addicted to drugs still remain homeless. C. Declining wages have put housing out of reach for many workers.
1. In every state, more than minimum wage is needed to afford a one or two bedroom apartment. 2. According to a study by the U.S. Conference of Mayors in 1998, a minimum wage worker would have to work 87 hours a week to afford a two bedroom apartment. 3. This insufficient income leaves many people homeless. D. Another contribution to homelessness is serious health problems.
1. Over 41 million Americans have no health care insurance according to the U.S. Bureau of Census. 2. Homelessness severely impacts health and well being a. With the exception of obesity, strokes, and cancer, homeless people are far more likely to suffer from every category of severe health problem. b. Conditions which require regular, uninterrupted treatment, such as HIV / AIDS, addictive disorders, and mental disorders are extremely difficult to treat or control among those without adequate housing. c.
Housing is the first from of treatment for homeless people with medical problems. (Transition: It should be clear by now that the homeless epidemic in the U.S. is a problem, so let's look at some ways we can help.) Satisfaction I. Homelessness is not a problem that will just go away, but we can help fight the problem A. One way to help is to volunteer your time. 1. Working at soup kitchens not only benefit the homeless, but also is a good way to get a first hand experience with this problem. 2.
You can also help homeless people get jobs by tutoring at a job skills center. 3. If you have any job related talent, you can offer to teach a course on it. B. Donating money is also a reliable way to help this epidemic. 1.
Donate money to charities 2. Support homeless fund-raises. C. Your not the only person that can help 1. Write to government officials and ask them to help you fight homelessness. II.
Some of you may ask, "Why help? I'm not homeless so why waste my time or money trying to fix a problem I don't have?" A. Homeless people are human beings just like you and I. 1. They deserve a fair chance at life. 2. They need our help because they cannot do it alone. 3.
Without help many of these people will die. B. Helping the homeless can also benefit you. 1. When people don't have enough money to pay for medical insurance who's pocket does it come out of? Yours and mine. a. Taxes are taken out of every pay check to help cover these costs b. Taxes are also taken out to support welfare programs.

Many cities and some states have plans in place to end homelessness. B. The National Alliance to End Homelessness has a ten year plan to end homelessness. II. You can also visit web to read testimony from former homeless people. A. Listening to their story might give you a better understanding of what kind of lives these people endure.
