August 4, 2002 Dear Journal, Today I boarded an airplane in Philadelphia. I haven't been on a plane before, so I was very nervous. The takeoff was pretty smooth. I finally relaxed, then we landed in Atlanta, Georgia. From here I rented a green compact car from Hertz. I drove from Atlanta to Tula in one night.

I eventually arrived at the border and showed the officials my voter registration card and driver's license. I finally crossed the border into Mexico. From here I wen to my first stop, Tula. I stayed at the Sharon, a seven-story modern hotel, is placed right across the street from the town hall and not far from the archaeological area. August 5, 2002 Dear Journal, I woke up this morning to a beautiful snow covered ground. I drove over freezing roads to a Toltec site.

The most spectacular site I saw while I was at the site was the Atlantes, the giant stone sculptures. They are said to be guarding the Pyramid of the Morning Star. After exploring the ancient site, I went back to the hotel and ate at the hotel's fine restaurant. I had to be sure not to get anything that may make travelers such as myself sick. Shortly after, I checked out of the Sharon and drove into Mexico City and checked into the Matron for the night. August 6, 2002 Dear Journal, Today I went to the National Art Museum, Museo Nacional de Arte, and saw the beautifully crafted building.

There is a lovely double staircase made of bronze and marble enclosed by a semi-circular window three stories high. The artwork in the museum was incredible. The museum has 24 galleries ranging in Mexican art in every form. After an exhausting trip to the art museum, I decided to have dinner in the hotel's restaurant. Then Ihad drinks in the lobby bar where a pianist plays nightly as hotel guest can enjoy the music and scenery of the beautiful hotel.

August 7, 2002 Dear Journal, I watched some TV in my room last night as I went to sleep. I was glad to have taken Spanish classes in school, so I could have a slight understanding as to what was being said on TV. Today I went to the Catedral Metrolitana. It is the biggest church in Latin America.

The church was so beautiful and very large. There were hundreds of paintings and sculptures throughout the building. The wonderful clock tower was full of statues of Faith, Hope, and Charity. I went back to the hotel, gathered my things, and drove to The Casa Gonzalez, where will be spending the next three nights. August 8, 2002 Dear Journal, I started the morning with a not so great outlook. I did not sleep well last night, because the family in the next room had 4 children who kept running and banging the walls all night long!!

I walked across the street to the British Embassy and poked around a little, but quickly got bored. So I went on to The Torre Latino americana. It is a skyscraper from on the top, I could see a wonderful view of the Mexico City skyline. I went back to the hotel for dinner and went to bed.

August 9, 2002 Dear Journal, I checked out of the Casa Gonzalez and hastily drove to the Four Seasons where I will be staying for 2 nights. I swam in the huge pool in the hotel which was a nice escape from the Mexican heat. After a long swim, I went to my room which was elegant and luxurious and had brilliantly high ceilings. I then went to the flower-filled courtyard and marveled at the lovely fountain. Continued on the the hotel's 5-star restaurant where I enjoyed a delicious meal. August 10, 2002 Dear Journal, Last night, after my huge meal, I was in bed very early and enjoyed a comfortable night of peaceful sleeping.

I decided today was the day to check-out the hotel's gym and spa facilities. I worked out for 3 hours, with a great trainer, Miguel. He helped me learn to tone my muscles in ways I never knew before. After suck a strenuous work out, I went on to a relaxing trip to the spa. I had a mud bath to soften my skin. Then, I have a deep tissue massage which felt so nice to my tired muscles.

I then had a facial and a quick stop in the tanning bed, for a natural Mexican glow. After I got some color, I had a total manicure and pedicure treatment. I then realized that it was time to drive to Puebla. August 11, 2002 Dear Journal, I arrived in Puebal later then I have intended last night, but I checked into the Colonial just fine. I decided that today, I was to explore the foothills of the Sierra Madre. I came across the El Parian market and purchased a couple ceramics for my mother and grandmother.

I then went on to explore the Mayan ruins of Comacalco. The Comacalco ruins show 3 large ceremonial complexes. When I returned to the Colonial, I knew I would have to eat quickly and go to bed early. I would have to wake up early in the morning and drive to Cancun.

It was going to be a long day for me. August 12, 2002 Dear Journal, I woke up at five o'clock this morning so I could get a head start on my drive to Cancun. I drove for hours until I finally reached the Hilton Cancun Golf and Beach Resort. Ith as a unique pyramid-like construction. I checked out the hotel and walked around the gardens and relaxed for some time in the lobby bar with other guests. I ate dinner in the hotel.

The food was exquisite. I went to my extraordinary suite and went to bed in total comfort. August 13, 2002 Dear Journal, I woke up this morning and immediately took a trip to the 18-hole golf course of the hotel. I played a great round of golf with some other travelers. Their names were, Jessica, Frank, and Wilson. The four of us then went to "Bob's Snorkel Club" and went snorkeling.

We saw all kinds of exotic sea-life. The fish were so beautiful and brightly-colored. We went to a charming cafe for dinner then returned to the hotel, where we took a quick dip in the heated pool. We then went out separate ways, and went to bed. August 14, 2002 Dear Journal, I checked out of the Hilton right away, and drove on to the Krystal Cancun.

My suite was lovely. I went to lay out on the beach for several hours. The water was crystal clear and warm. The hot sand felt so nice on my feet, much like the familiar feeling from my many trips to the shore back home in NJ.

I then realized that I was home sick. I called my mom and told her all about my trip so far. She was glad to hear my voice, I think she was going to begin to cry. I went back to my hotel and ate dinner in one of its four restaurants. I went to bed early, thinking only of the days of my trip still to come. August 15, 2002 Dear Journal, Today, I went to breakfast in another of the hotel's four restaurants.

Then, I swam in the hotel's pool. There I met a cute lone traveler, Bill. Bill and I went site-seeing in the city for a while. Then he took me to dinner at yet another one of restaurants in the hotel. We then went on to check out the scene at the hotel's disco or club. We danced along with other visitors and stayed out all night.

We had a really great time. August 16, 2002 Dear Journal, Bill and I had breakfast in the market this morning. We brought fresh fruits and made out own fresh fruit salads for lunch. After we had them, we went to a scuba diving place.

We went scuba diving and explored the beautiful sites underwater. After that, we explored the pyramid and other ruins of El Rey. Then we went to dinner in the fourth of the hotel's restaurants and went our separate ways. August 17, 2002 Dear Journal, I left the Krystal Cancun and drove to Acapulco. I checked into El Marauder and went out onto my private balcony where I could see the famous cliff divers at La Quebrada. I was tired from a busy day yesterday, so I just swam in the hotel pool and had dinner in my room.

I watched TV and was quite intrigued by the Spanish soap operas, they " re so romantic and exciting. I then went to bed early, after standing out on my balcony, overlooking the beautiful ocean view. August 18, 2002 Dear Journal, I woke up to a brilliant sun this morning. Before I actually came to, I could feel the warmth of the sun on my cheeks, and imagined I was a mermaid on the shore, basking in the glowing sunshine. I took a ten-minute boat ride to Isla la Roque ta, a small offshore island with thatched-roof restaurants, a small zoo, and several beaches.

I went to the zoo on the island and saw many exotic birds. I stayed on the beach for several hours, and ate at several small cafes and took a boat back to the mainland. I went to a small disco, or club, near my hotel. I met some natives and many travelers like myself. I got back to the hotel late tonight. August 19, 2002 Dear Journal, I left El Mirador and drove to the next hotel I was staying at in Acapulco, Malibu.

My room was octagon shaped with a private terrace and a lovely fireplace. I went for a dip in the hotel pool, then went to dinner in its pool side restaurant. I had a delicious meal there. Then went into the hotel's lobby bar and listened to a band play native cultural songs. I went back to my room and lit the fireplace and sat in my room alone, watching the fire. I reflected on my trip so far and all of the exciting experiences I've had and the great people I met on the way.

Finally got to bed around midnight. August 20, 2002 Dear Journal, Today I woke up around noon. It was raining cats and dogs outside. I decided now was the time to shop. I immediately wanted to tour the designer shopping plazas. I bought several gifts for my friends and family, along with many things for myself.

Went I returned to the hotel, I went to the lobby bar again to mingle with other travelers. I then went back to my gorgeous room and ordered a classic Mexican desert from room-service. August 21, 2002 Dear Journal, I woke up today and checked out of Malibu and drove to Real de Catorce. I had a hard time finding the place I was staying. I drove all around the old streets until I finally found El Mason de la Abundancia. It was a rustic family-run hotel.

I checked in and immediately took a tour of the place. I found out it was built in the former 19-century treasury, and has kept all of its original doors, keys, and furniture. I had dinner at a nearby cafe. August 22, 2002 Dear Journal, Today I toured Real de Catorce.

I saw all the crumbling structures and the ghost-town atmosphere of the city. I went to tour the old Mexican silver mine that are hidden high in the mountains of the Sierra Madre Oriental. I had to go through a tunnel to get there. There are only a few families that stayed after the fall of the silver industry. I went back to my hotel and had dinner in its restaurant.

Then headed up to my room and lit the fireplace. I was finally relaxing after a day of climbing hills and walking through tunnels. August 23, 2002 Dear Journal, Today I toured the Parroquia de San Francisco, a Neo-Classical church. Inside the church was a statue of St. Francis of Assisi. There was also a large collection of votive pictures, and Mexican folk art. Once a year, pilgrims flood the town for religious services.

There is also an old silver warehouse dating back to the 1860's. The town is full of abandoned, ornate mansions, a ruined bullfighting, and a cockfighting ring. I got back to the hotel after eating dinner out, I went right to bed early. August 24, 2002 Dear Journal, I checked out of the hotel and drove to my next destination, Chihuahua. I checked into the San Francisco. My first thought was to go to the lobby and listen to the live band.

I did, and had a great time. I met back up with Bill, the traveler I met in Cancun, he was staying at the San Francisco for three nights like I was. We danced and met some locals. They planned to show me and Bill the Adobe buildings tomorrow.

I went into my room and planned for the day ahead. August 25, 2002 Dear Journal, Today the locals showed me and Bill the extraordinary complex of adobe buildings. They were set on a plateau overlooking the Casas Grande River. In its day, it probably housed around 3,000 people. Its partial destruction by a fire in about 1340 and the disappearance of its inhabitants have yet to be explained. We walked through the maze like construction, some up to five-floors high.

Bill and I got back to the hotel around six o'clock and decided to go for drive around the city. We saw market places and older- style houses. Then we went to the hotel for the night. August 26, 2002 Dear Journal, I left the hotel early this morning and drove to Coba.

I was staying at VillasArqueologicas for two nights. Today I stayed at the hotel for the day. I toured its beautiful gardens and took a swim in the courtyard pool. Then, I played a quick set of tennis with one of the cute instructors, Juan. We played a good game, then I had dinner in the hotel restaurant and went to my lovely room for the night. August 27, 2002 Dear Journal, Today I toured the city of Coba.

The city is built around a group of lakes. I visited the three principal clusters of buildings. I had to go on long walks along the trails that connect them. There was the Coba Group, this group had a wonderful church.

The next was, the Maca nox Group, where a collection of stale a carved by Mayans can be seen. The third group was the No hoch Mul Group. I climbed up the temple, which was very hard. It's the highest pyramid in the Yucatan. Once I got to the top, I saw an incomparable view of the lakes and jungle below. After this hard day of climbing and exploring, I went right to the hotel and ordered room service dinner and slept.

August 28, 2002 Dear Journal, I checked out and left Coba. I drove to El Conquistador in Tijuana, where I'll be staying the last three nights of my trip to Mexico. This was a colonial-style hotel, close to the racetrack. My room was spacious and had elegant furniture. I soon went to the pool and.

After that I went to the sauna, which felt so nice. Then I walked through the beautiful indoor and outdoor gardens. I went back to my room and stayed in the Jacuzzi until I was ready for bed. August 29, 2002 Dear Journal, Today I visited some of Tijuana's many shopping malls. There were quiet I saw many painted pottery, leather boots, silver jewelry, mex cal, and tequila.

Then Went to the Centro Cultural Tijuana and saw a movie about Mexico. It was very informative. When I got back to the hotel I went to the underground night club in the basement and danced until I was too tired to move anymore. August 30, 2002 Dear Journal, I woke up this morning to the most beautiful sunrise I've ever seen. I went into the lobby of the hotel to read the local newspaper to see if there was anything interesting to checkout today. I saw an article saying it was the Ven dimia Wine Festival.

I decided to go and see what it was all about. I got there and people were in the town center partying and celebrating. The growers and producers showed off their wares in Mexico's principal wine region. I got into my room and began reminiscing all the memories of my trip that I'll have forever.

August 31, 2002 Dear Journal, I checked out of the hotel and drove to Atlanta, GA. From there I boarded my plane back to Philadelphia, PA. This plane ride was not as good as the first, there were two bratty little kids in the seats behind me. The whole two and a half hours of my flight, they kept bumping the back of my seat. I was so annoyed.

I was so glad to get back to Philadelphia. I practically kissed the ground as I got off the plane. From here, I met my family in the airport and hugs and kisses went around like crazy. I saw Bill from earlier in my trip. We talked for awhile in the airport and exchanged numbers and information, then suddenly we realized we lived on the same street as each other street. I'd never seen him before, because our schedules are different, but we plan to go out for coffee sometime.

So in the end, I had a really nice trip, met some really nice people, and got to see how it really is a small world after all.
