Dr. Ralph Vaughan Williams was born in Down Amp ney, England on October 12th 1872. From 1887 to 1890 he went to a school called Charterhouse, he then spent two years at The Royal College of Music and then to Trinity College, Cambridge, where he took the degree of Bachelor of Music in 1894 and the Bachelor of Arts in 1895. Vaughn Williams then went back to The Royal College of music and studied composition under Sir Hubert Parry and Sir Charles Stanford and studied the organ under Sir Walter Parrott, who was a leading British organist. He studied in Berlin with a German composer called Max Bruch and in Paris with a French composer called Maurice Ravel. He then came back to England where he worked as an organist for a church.

In 1901 he went to Cambridge to go on to the degree of Doctor of Music. In 1908 he went to Paris to investigate the new methods at firsthand. Vaughan Williams joined the army when war broke out and served in France and Salonica, then he left and went back to England where he was appointed to the staff of the Royal College of Music as a professor of composition. He also conducted the Handel Society and the London Bach Choir.
