Ball In The Goal Behind The Goalie example essay topic
All of my freshman year I took good aggressive shots and most of them were on goal. In practice I would put many of my shots behind the goalie but it seemed like the goalies in the games were brick walls. I can remember it like it was yesterday I picked up the ball verses Chantilly at the restraining line and carried it to the right corner of the box. The right side is my best side for taking shots; I have a fairly strong right hand with my stick. I took my man one on one, I tried to go outside and he was there so I went on the inside of the defender.
He wasn't ready and I had an open shot about fifteen feet out from the goal, I took it. In an instant the Chantilly goalie was on his knees with his stick in the dust. I felt like the world was paused. Then very slowly I saw him get up and pass the ball to his teammate who took off for our side. He had saved the last shot I would take for that season. The whole year after I spent time getting in shape and working on my stick skills.
At least twice a week I would go and shoot at the tennis courts that were near my house. I worked and worked at getting to be the best lacrosse player I could be. I wanted to know what it felt like to have my name and number announced over the whole field and possibly if I did my very best over the P.A. system in school the next morning. During the off-season after my freshman year the head coach, Coach La Chance, was replaced.
Coach La Chance was always willing to listen to my questions and was always helping me to get better, he knew how I was working in the off-season and had hinted that he might have a place on his varsity squad for me. When I found out that he wouldn't be coaching I was discouraged at first but then I realized how all of my practicing would help me even more now. The first day off winter training we met the new coaches one was an assistant coach who was brought up as the head coach and the second was an angry looking older man who was from Robinson, the best team in our district. After meeting the coaches they told us that we would be running a mile while they timed us. I heard all the other players groan but I was happy that I would be getting a chance to prove myself. I ran the fastest mile that any lacrosse player has ever run.
The new coaches seemed impressed and that made me happy. I thought to myself that I might just make varsity after all. At the end of the first week of practices they posted the varsity and J.V. cuts. I waited for the crowd in front of them to clear before I checked which team I was on. I looked through the varsity list first, my name wasn't there. So I looked again... surely they would put their fastest man on varsity, wouldn't they?
Nope I was put on J.V.! But anyways this paper is about a great moment or feeling so I better get on with the story. On the J.V. squad I was the starting right midfielder. I was happy to be at least starting so I got over the whole varsity thing, however I still had never scored in a game.
I was on my favorite side and I was starting so I would be getting plenty of opportunities and felt that I was close to my personal victory. The first game was against our rival Mount Vernon High. The whole bus ride there I thought about how it might feel to score a goal. When we got there I was feeling ready. The game started and we scored the first two goals. At halftime it was 2-0 in our favor and it seemed like we would win, I still had not scored yet however.
In the third quarter Mount Vernon scored three times making the score 2-3 in their favor. I knew that if we didn't score in the fourth quarter that we wouldn't even have the hope of overtime. The coach put the second line in for the start of the fourth quarter and my line and I watched for about six minutes that's when the coach put my line in the game. Our goalie had the ball when I came in to the game; he passed it to one of the other midfielders who started a fast break. I ran downfield as fast as I could in front of him. When he got about three quarters of the way down field he was caught by a defender.
I looked behind me and made eye contact with him just before he passed me the ball. I caught his pass while I was still running. Right then everything slowed down I looked in front of me and saw their goalie. I took two steps while I was winding up for my shot and let it go. Right then I felt a sense of total focus. The ball was the most important thing in the world at that moment.
That is a great moment and feeling all in itself but the paper is about the felling that I got when the world returned to normal speed and I saw the ball in the goal behind the goalie wearing a brick colored jersey. The feeling of total euphoria and celebration that came with that goal is a great moment that I will never forget. It might be that it was because I had achieved my personal goal or that it was the subject of lunchtime conversation for weeks to come that has rooted itself in my minds eye, either way it was a great felling that I will never forget. And by the way the next game I scored three goals and they said my name with the morning announcements.
That moment was sweet too, but never for the rest of my life will I forget that first feeling of total jubilation.
