DRUMMOND: "Mrs. Cain. Cain's wife. If, "In the beginning" there were only Adam and Eve, and Cain and Abel, where'd this extra woman spring from? Ever figure that out?" BRADY: (Cool) "No, sir.
I will leave the agnostics to hunt for her". (pp. 80) DRUMMOND: "I mean, did people 'begat' in those days about the same way they get themselves 'begat' today?" BRADY: "The process is about the same. I don't think your scientists have improved it any". (pp. 81) DRUMMOND: .".. How old do you think this rock is?" BRADY: (Intoning) "I am more interested in the Rock of Ages, than I am in the Age of Rocks". (pp. 84) - Alongside witty remarks, Drummond and Brady constantly exchange insults amongst themselves, often escalating to the point where the judge must intervene to remind them of their roles. Irony - Monkey (early on in the book with the arrival of Brady imminent, E.K. Hornbeck turns to a monkey and says "Grandpa!" It is ironic that such an even occurred between the two, since the trial itself later went on to be known as the 'Monkey Trials. HORNBECK: "Oh. Excuse me.
I must be thinking of another Elijah". (An organ-grinder enters, with a live monkey on a string. Hornbeck spies the monkey gleefully; he greets the monk with arms outstretched). "Grandpa!" (Crosses to the monkey, bends down and shakes the monkey's hand) "Welcome to Hillsboro, sir! Have you come to testify for the defense or for the prosecution?" (pp. 14) - Mrs. Brady (Throughout the entire story we see numerous examples of Mrs. Brady working hard to take care and provide Mr. Brady. After the intense struggle with him, it is ironic that he ends up dead, the very thing which Mrs. Brady was trying to prevent.
The People of Hillsboro - The people of Hillsboro serve throughout the book as the instrument with which the story is dramatized. We see in the courtroom not only a battle of intellect between Brady and Drummond, but we also see a battle of wits, to outsmart the other and win the acceptance of the townsfolk. The townsfolk almost serve as a jury as well, since we see in the end, once Brady does lose his grip on the audience with his final few statements, Drummond takes command of the trial and steers it in his favor. BRADY: (Reaching for a sympathetic ear, trying to find the loyal audience which has slipped away from him) (pp. 90) - The general populace that we interact with, or that we are introduced to by main characters puts the average person of Hillsboro to be a Flat character, one that never questions authority, and remains a follower of either Brady or the Reverend Jeremiah. Theory of Evolution. The origin of the universe occurred about 14 billion years ago...
The earth coalesced about 4.5 billion years ago... Life subsequently began, probably as bacteria, and has been evolving ever since. Evolved from single cell to complex cell, then to multi-cellular organisms about 1.5 billion years ago. The process of evolution has been driven by purely natural forces, without input from a God or a goddess or multiple deities... Humans later evolved from primates about 30 million years ago. Theory of Creation.
