COMPARING THE MOVIE BRAVEHEART TO REALITY Braveheart may not be completely historically accurate, but yet it does do a good job of portraying the spirit of the times. The battles with William Wallace and King Edward were pretty much accurate but did still have their faults. In this essay I will be finding the fact and fiction that was depicted in the movie Braveheart. Mel Gibson did an excellent job capturing the essence of the character William Wallace.

Although his portrayal is probably closer to the legendary man rather that the historical one. Mel Gibson did much research to prepare for the role of willam Wallace. In the words of many of his deciles Wallace was as brave, ruthless, strong, and also honorable beyond his time. They portrayed Wallace in the film to be a fighter of freedom, who believed in his causes and took it to the extreme, which in truth is the same about the real willam Wallace as well. Through the first 30 minutes of the film they showed how in the childhood years of willam life his father and older brother were killed in a peace meeting with the English. But in actual facts his dad and older brother were not killed then.

But years later when willam was the age of 19 his dad was killed in a battle in 1291. And his mother and brother were still alive many years after the fact. Many of the battles that took place in this film showed how when the horsemen got near they would use long spears to kill the horses and knock the rider off to better attack them. This method was called the sch itron which was later credited to willam Wallace who invented the method. In this film they show willam (mel gibson) to be a shorter more slender man, but in fact the real willam Wallace stood a full 6 feet 7 inches with a stocky body to match with the height you could say he was a giant of a man.

Although not portrayed this way in the film. Willam Wallace a commoner, a savage, and a patriot. Who led his fellow commoners into battle to acquire freedom for Scotland. He was very intelligent outsmarting the English armies several times. Willam was not only a fighter but one who loved so one women, murron... Although it is seen in the movie that they wed there is no record or actual fact that they ever did.

Yet Willam swore vengeance upon hearing of her fate. She was killed by the English for an attack on the kings men and for Wallaces involvement in the uprising. Not much is noted on her except the love willam and Murron shared that caused such an uproar on Wallaces part after her brutal death. The one man that willam definitely hated would have to be king Edward. A man of power yet poorly used. Portrayed with accuracy by Patrick McGoohan, he was a formidable foe.

If you were to ask a Welshman or a Scott they would definitely have to say king Edward was a cruel and ruthless man. As he is played out in brave heart. He made a law that allowed the English lords freedom to sleep with the Scottish women, trying to out breed them. Thus so in life as in this film.

He had a son prince Edward, played by Peter Hanley. Many believed his son was homosexual which was presented in this film, he was described as handsome with outstanding strength and a behavior of an unusual matter. He tried so to devote himself to the king, his father but was more into actors, grooms, sailors, and others who were skilled in similar practices. He cared nothing of his fathers matters only that one day he could take over, all this portrayed in the film. King Edward, trying to trick Wallace and his men attempted to turn some of his own people against him therefore bribing the Irishmen to fight against William not with him. In the end when they were going to battle they all tricked king Edward and joined together for battle against king Edward, which is true.

There is no denying his talent for leadership, his fearlessness and energy for his vision..
