Better Things About America example essay topic

751 words
My Experiences in America It all started when I got engaged with Pankaj, my husband. He is a Graduate student at Sam Houston Sate University. Because he was already in America, I was suppose to join him too after getting married. I had seen America in different Hindi movies. But what I imagined was entirely different than what America was, especially, Huntsville.

My husband's uncle was financing his education and his wife was the one who came to receive us when our plane landed in Houston. She is an American, I was told about that but I was very nervous to actually see her until she came and hugged me. She broke the ice between me and her on the way to Huntsville. So my first experience was what she taught me when my husband was busy getting some stuff from Wal-Mart with his friend. The first thing she told me was that when you come to any new country then you will have option to choose between good and bad. It will depend on you as to what you choose.

She also told me that America is a land of opportunity and if you work hard here then it will pay for sure. She told me that in America there are different kinds of allergies; therefore, keeping things clean at house is very important. She made me acquainted with all the means of utilizing space efficiently, as we had very little room available. Till today her support in different areas of my live has been a tremendous help to me.

Another very important experience of mine was with starting my studies in America. I had to take GED, TOEFL, TASK examinations in order to get into the college. Each of the tests was full of new experiences and tested me on different skills. Today, after finishing all my tests and a semester of my college, I feel much confident of my skills. I never had this feeling in my Country. One of my American friends taught me how to swim.

Till date, I can't believe that I can actually swim. Some of the things I love about America are that here there is uninterrupted electricity and water throughout the year, which is hard to imagine in India. Even though our apartment is small but it has all the appliances to make life easy and fast. Internet the tool of latest and bountiful information is available at all times and is cheap too. Internet made my life easy to stay connected with my family and friends.

And now with web cam, my family can even see me anytime they want to. I feel technology much better here than I use to feel in India. My American friends always helped me in studies, transportation and have made me more confident of my skills. But like a coin that has two sides, I had my share of problems in America. I am a vegetarian and in my country, restaurants have all kinds of vegetarian food in their menu but not so in America. Here it is very hard to find things which are vegetarian.

Another bad experience was moving around without a car. For sure, America without car is like swimming in a long river without boat. Every store is far away and it is hard to go bare foot anywhere because of high speed traffic. In America education after high school is very expensive and for international students it is four times of what it is for residential students. I feel lucky to have scholarship over here as without scholarship it will be next to impossible for me and my husband to study at the same time. Last but not the least I miss my family and friends.

There are some Indians here but still people with whom I grew up with are the ones I miss the most and I think that as the most important social loss. In conclusion, I still like what I achieved in America and I love the feeling of making my family and husband proud of myself. America is nice country to live and meet people from different countries and making friends. I hope to learn and experience better things about America in coming years.
