Is the universe, open, close or flat? Science embraces the Big Bang theory as the explanation for the creation of the universe. Theologians have their own Big Bang theory as written in Genesis: GOD created the universe in seven days. These two theories contradict each other and people have had to choose which one is true. So it comes down to this question; did something just appear from nothing or did someone make something appear?

If proof is required, both explanations require a leap of faith. What if they both were true? What if science could reasonably prove what was written in the book of Genesis 3000 years ago? In this essay, I will attempt to contrast the two views. Theologians say in the beginning, when GOD created the heavens and the earth, the earth was a formless wasteland, and darkness covered the abyss, while a great wind swept over the waters.

Scientists say that the Big Bang sent cosmic debris to every corner of the universe. This debris slowly united into spherical masses creating the beginning of stars, planets solar systems and galaxies. This scientific explanation has an uncanny similarity to what was written in Genesis thousands of years ago. Formless wasteland and darkness covering the abyss could be the same as cosmic debris slowly forming spherical masses. Keep in mind that an ancient writer would not have any concept of galaxies and solar systems only speculations. This is also shown in Paradise Lost when Milton was talking about the nine planets.

As for the oceans and the atmosphere, GOD said, "Let there be a dome in the middle of the waters, to separate one body of water from the other". And so it happened: GOD made the dome, and it separated the water above the dome from the water below it. GOD called the dome "the sky". Scientists say that after countless millenniums, the earth cooled and an atmosphere was created from the thick haze that encircled the earth. Water vapor rose from the vast oceans, which completely covered the earth, creating clouds. This is the separation of the two bodies of water -- the oceans and the atmosphere.

The question of whether the universe in open, closed or flat is not however expressed in Genesis. Aristotle provided some of that information to us. Aristotle also found some evidence that the Earth was round. First, he saw that during an eclipse, the shadow of the earth on the moon showed a circular edge. This would only be possible if the earth were round. Second, he observed that the North Star appeared to travel higher in the sky when people were traveling north, but it appeared to move slowly down toward the horizon for people that traveled south.

If the earth were flat, the positions of stars would not change as a person traveled in any direction. With all these questions and ideas, nothing being proven and nothing being answered, it makes you wonder if there is something that can bring justice. There is. The Theory of Everything could solve some of the greatest galactic puzzles. The only Theory of Everything that exists is GOD. In summation, the Bible clearly takes the position that the universe had a beginning.

The few details provided by the Genesis account are remarkably consistent with those predicted by modern scientists about what must have happened at the beginning, if we reverse the current expansion of the universe, and follow the arrow of time back to the bow of the Archer. The first act of creation is the creation of light. The event referred to as the Big Bang by scientists begins with a tremendous explosion of light and electromagnetic radiation, so powerful that we can still detect it today. The conditions before this were "formless and void", according to the Genesis account. The first few instants of the Big Bang model describe sub-particles and forces that are formless, not even condensed yet into the most basic atomic particles that we recognize today as "unchangeable" protons, neutrons and electrons. As they expand into the "void", they are formed into elements, stars, and planets.

Genesis does not specify the amount of "micro intervention" executed by God in these events, merely that He created them, and affirmed them as good. The order of appearance of the things that were made by God also appears to follow modern scientific thought. The light came first, then matter, then plants, then simpler life forms, and finally, man. Through the instruments of science we find that God made this perfect universe and that His creation is good.
