After the Democrats lost their ill-gotten majority in the Senate after the 2002 mid-term elections, national pundits searched high and low to determine the cause behind such a seismic shift in American politics. This shift has been taking place for the last twenty years, and the Republican party seems to be on the verge of establishing a majority for a generation. The pundits swarmed to their leader, Bill Clinton, who had been out of the spotlight for days after the election results. "Please, Bill", they cried, "tell us what it all means! Make everything make sense!" Former President Clinton's answer was more spin, he blamed the Democrats inability to compete with Republicans in fund-raising and "getting our message out" for the Dems devastating loss. The truth is, the blame for the marginalization of the once-noble Democratic party rests squarely on the shoulders of one William Jefferson Clinton. When Bill Clinton became president in 1992, he inherited a country that was, for the most part, Democratic. He enjoyed solid leads in the House and Senate, as well as a majority of the governorships and state legislatures. It only took two years for him to begin his incapacitation of the Democrats. His economic plan, increased taxes on the middle class, including retroactive tax increases, left a sour taste in the mouths of voters.
"Hillary Care" was shot down by the American people, who recognized the liberal attempt to federalize health care. The voters expressed their disapproval in November of 1994, when the historic Republican "revolution" took place. The Democrat's slide into obscurity continued for the rest of Clinton's presidency until the dark evening of midterms in 2002. Republicans now control the White House, Senate, and House of Reps. Republicans have also gained a national majority in governorships and state legislature. What changed? The Republicans have only just now developed a real leader in George W. Bush, he certainly doesn't explain the American shift to the right.
