Blake Babies, one of the most influential bands of the last fifteen years, were born in the second half of the '80's, first as a quartet and then as a trio, with Freda Boner on drums, John Strohm on voice and guitar and Juliana Hatfield on voice, bass and guitar. At the time they were in their late teenage years. Blake Babies' area is what was going to become college rock (which they were actually contributing to build): folk lines in the style of early REM, tiny melodies, distortions a la Pixies and Dinosaur Jr.

For a number of reasons, including the fact that 18-years-old Juliana's shy leadership contrasted with their distorted sound, Blake Babies established as a cult band and as a intimately generational phenomenon (as one could see from the concerts following their recent reunion). Blake Babies' impact of American indie music, directly and indirectly, has been enormous. Entire labels, such as Jade Tree and Polyvinyl, or movements, such as emo core, perhaps would not exist without their records. The same could be said for riot girls, that somebody may remember, fox core, and as in a chain reaction, for unnumbered other bands. On the tide of the latest "God Bless The Blake Babies", Mammoth reissues nearly the whole discography (only the early EP "Nicely, Nicely" is missing, but should come this Fall).

Debut album "Earwig" comes from 1989 but one would not say. There's a lot of loud singing, a lot of catchy tunes, and guitar free hearted in their being mellow and tenuously violent at the same time. More than one band took notes. (8/10) "Sunburn", dated 1990, begins with an anthem titled "I'm Not Your Mother", where with hardcore rage, Juliana shouts "You " re a weakling, you " re a suckling lamb. You " re not so tough, you " re just a man". Just a bit below the former, but also a track like "Girl In A Box" (which used the words "slut" and "whore") in its own ways marked a time.

Alanis Morris ette cashed later on. (8/10) "Rosy Jack World" is an EP from 1991, with a cover of "Temptation Eyes" so pop-sounding to make you cry, and with an acoustic version of "Nirvana" (Cobain is not involved), a song that - electrified - would become one of the highlights of Hatfield's solo career. (6/10) Just after that, they disbanded. Strohm and Boner formed Antenna and Hatfield went solo. "Innocence And Experience" (a great and appropriate title quoting a line of poet William Blake) accurately resumes Blake Babies' adventure. It is an old anthology now appropriately reissued being the optimal starting point, with all the best tracks in chronological order.

The highlights from the previous records are here, plus two astounding demo versions of "Star" and "Rain" (dated 1986! ). (9/10) A line in "Cesspool", "Earwig" 's first track, says: "Maybe we will start a trend". Yes, you did..
