I try to lead with my strengths and work on my weaknesses as I lead and learn from others too. I like to lead with humor. Humor is a productive tool that can be used by leaders. How humor can be best used and its impact is the next question a leader needs to ask. Humor is more than telling the nominal joke at the beginning of a meeting, or the office cartoon that few people understand. Humor is a communicative strategy that brings people together.
Humor is a trainable skill. A strategy that everyone can use to create a positive environment. As a leader using humor to lead you need to make sure not to make anyone to get hurt or offended by the jokes. Leaders must take the opportunity for humor seriously, and take the serious organization humorously.
Humor comes from my keen observation of life and my capability to put things into proper perspective. On those days when everything goes wrong, I can tell when people really need a reminder that things could be worse. When things are tense, I know an appropriate joke will help the matter putting a smile on a face. Ever heard the phrase "laughter is the best medicine?" It's true! Laughter can cure many ills - or at least help you forget about them for a while. It also helps with stress relief.
Studies have found humor is one of the predominant coping mechanisms that helps make sure stress doesn't cause more deaths. Life is too important to be taken too seriously! Bond Team Bond humor will bring a group together and help bond. They say crisis can bring people together - but who wants to encounter crises every time they want to unify a group? A more productive team bonding exercise: a good, hearty, and belly laugh together. I am also a type of leader that uses teamwork to get things done.
I feel with out everyone putting in his or her ideas then you aren't the best team or leader, you can be. Also you need to make sure everyone is respected and treat him or her really how you would want to be treated. Retention if you look at organizations that experience high amounts of turnover, you might find that the members just don't have any fun. By keeping a light atmosphere your members will be more excited about participating. HAHA and AHA can be a cause of laughter. There is a link between these two phrases.
Humor and creativity go hand in hand! You may be thinking people won't take you seriously if you make use of humor in your leadership role. If your meetings are one hour and you spend 50 minutes telling jokes each time, yes, your humor may be getting a bit out of hand. It is possible to establish a balance between getting things done and getting laughs in! You can still have focus and lead effectively while encouraging your group to smile. To be a leader there are not set guidelines and I don't feel a single catagory but rather it is all up to you.
You just have to know your self, providing direction, implementing plans, and motivating people. If you can do all of this and include humor I think it can be a winning combination for a leader and a team.
