The Ashanti is the tribe that the beautiful kente cloth comes from. Each new design has a name of its own. One which is mostly yellow is called Gold Dust. The king has a specially-made kente that only he may wear.
The Ashanti women are responsible for this tedious weaving. Inheritance passes through the women of the tribe. Any land and children belong to the mother's clan, called the matriclan. A woman or man may not marry someone from their own matriclan. The parents must approve of the woman's husband.
A girl is expected to marry soon after her "coming of age" (Puberty) ceremony in which she is no longer considered a child and is responsible for her own actions. A man can marry any number of women as long as he can support them. This shows his wealth and generosity. There are less men than women in a tribe so this way of marrying several women helps to level this overbalance. Sometimes marriages end in divorce in which the men take the boys and the women take all the other children and land. Children have much freedom because parents seek to guide their children rather than discipline them.
If a child misbehaves it is considered the parents' fault, for if they had trained their children better then they would have behaved better. When babies are born, there are large celebrations in which the mother carries the baby on her back around the village. The village showers the two with gifts. A special ceremony is held to recognize the baby as a member of the tribe. Everyone helps train the child to walk and talk. The child is always being watched.
Boys are taught by their fathers to be farmers. In their early years, boys play with girls but as they grow older, girls are scared to play with boys because of their rough play. Girls spend much time with their mothers learning how to keep an orderly household. Men and women eat their meals separately.
Unmarried men eat with their uncles, but all the women eat together. The first wife, or senior, wife is often consulted if a new wife is to be added to the family.
