The USS Maine was one of the Navy's first armored battle ships. It was one of the first U.S. naval vessels with electrical lighting. So, in September of 1897, he asked the Spanish if the United States could help negotiate an end to the conflict.
He made it clear that if the war did not end soon, the U.S. might have to intervene.
