Don t talk. Please come on. ' A Farewell To Arms, a story of love and war by Ernest Hemingway, is set in the Julian Alps in what is now the frontier area between Italy and Yugoslavia. This story starts off with the Italian army who's job's is to keep the Austro-Hungarian forces occupied so that they could not actively help Germany on the Western and Eastern fronts, which Italy had succeeded in doing.
The narrator of A Farewell To Arms is Frederick Henry, a second lieutenant in the Italian Army, an American volunteer in the Ambulance Corps. Frederick lives in the Mess Hall which he shared with a man named Rinaldi, an exuberant Italian, Emotional and fiery. Rinaldi took Frederick to see Catherine Barkley, a beautiful tall blonde with tawny skin and gray eyes. Catherine and Frederick immediately had a benevolent conversation which Catherine was telling him about her fianc that had died a year ago in the war and continued saying "Then of course he was killed and that was the end of it,' because Catherine believed that death ended everything.
Soon after they met for the first time, Frederick had been going to see Catherine as much as he could which steadily led to their deep love for each other. When Frederick was wounded badly while eating cheese he was taken to the American hospital in Milan. Subsequent to Frederick's arrival to the hospital he was latterly met by Catherine, which stayed with him the whole time he was there. In the hospital were Frederick lay was the most intimate time they had with each other which Catherine had later learned that she became pregnant. The Following day Catherine tells Frederick that she is afraid of the rain when she is not with him and that she sees herself sometimes as being dead in the rain. After Frederick had felt stronger he had to return to war.
The Austrians and Germans began their drive on October 24, 1917, under the command of General Otto von Below, and the Italian troops commanded by General Cadorna fell back. As Frederick returned to the war in Caporetto, he saw that most of the soldiers "looked tired' and that "It has been a terrible summer' and that the major is "older and drier. ' In one of the chapters it immediately starts with violence when Frederick shoots one of the engineer sergeants, and the killing of Ammo by his own countrymen. Frederick Henry described the war to be in total confusion, increase in disorder, and increase in the lack of discipline, which all lead toward Frederick's ultimate decision to desert from the Italian Army. Following Frederick's desert from the army he headed out to see Catherine in the hospital were she worked and explained to her his decision of starting a happy life together. Catherine was excited by the news and they decided to sail to Switzerland, which was a neutral country in World War I. During the first few weeks were they were getting settled into a supremely happy life in the w interland on the mountainside above Montreux.
The happy days in Switzerland are abruptly coming to an end when Catherine's labors start, they can feel an element of doom. A doctor tells Frederick of what they are preparing to come. The Caesarean, the dead baby, and then the hemorrhage. Catherine laid in the bed very ill saying in a very low voice "Don t worry, Darling, I m not a bit afraid.
It's just a dirty trick. ' After waited outside the door for a long time a nurse told Frederick That Catherine is dead and that she had one hemorrhage after another. Frederick went in to see Catherine for one last time and said "It was like saying good-by to a statue. After a while I went out and left the hospital and walked back to the hotel in the rain. ' (remember what Catherine said about how she felt about the rain.) I think that this story is very important because it taught me in a very well written description of the first world war by Ernest Hemingway. He also gave a very good depiction of the German attack on Caporetto of lines of tired men marching in the rain, hungry, weary, and demoralized is one of the greatest moments in literary history.
The ideas that I feel we should discuss in class are the conditions of the war for the soldiers, and United States connection with World War I..
