Causes Diabetes example essay topic
There is currently no cure for Diabetes. Let us go into what causes diabetes, how it can be prevented and the types of treatments we have for it. In the United States alone there are approximately 15 million people that have been diagnosed with diabetes and about 12 million people that have it and they just don't know it. Diabetes is the third leading cause of death, just behind heart disease and cancer. There are two types of diabetes, type I and Type II. Just generally speaking, Type I is when a person doesn't produce enough insulin in his body and Type II is when the pancreas totally stop producing this hormone at all.
Doctors do not really know how or what causes diabetes. Many doctors however have agreed that drinkers and smokers have a significantly higher risk of developing diabetes. As well, diabetes can be traced back to the genetics of a family. If your father or some of your aunts have diabetes, it is probable that you or your children might have diabetes when you get older as well. Diabetes is basically a disease that causes your body to have a super high sugar level caused by a lack of insulin in the body. To combat this, doctors can give their patients insulin in a form of an injection.
Medicine can also be given to the patient to treat diabetes. Medicine does not "inject" insulin into patience's body. Instead it will cause the other organs of the body to release less sugar into the blood stream. The insulin and / or medications given to the patient will have to be closely monitored. If not, the result could mean the patient having a super low level of sugar in their blood, causing light headiness, fainting and etc... all in which will normally lead to hospitalization.
A healthy diet and regular exercise is also required to combat diabetes. The diet normally consists of whatever is low on sugar. Exercising will burn up the excess sugar energy and keep the body healthy in fighting this disease. In the days of the past, insulin injection would normally be done with a needle being stuck into patience's body. This is often annoying and irritable to the patient. With today's new technology however, insulin can now be injected into a patient's body by way or an "air needle".
This shoots a shot of air that is capable of penetrating the skin and delivering the insulin into your blood stream. Activa Brand Products of Canada is currently developing that technology. As will, companies have now also developed technologies that would allow a patient to breath in insulin. To test a person's blood sugar level one would require a simple prick or a person finger to get a blood sample, which would in turn be sent over to a test strip and into a machine. The machine would be run an analysis of a persons blood and tell you how high or low your blood sugar might be (A person's normal blood sugar should be around 100). With today's technology, patients can now simple swab a bit of their saliva and have a machine analysis that sample.
This makes the monitoring and maintaining a balanced sugar level easier for a person with diabetes. As well, the waste management from all the needles and blood will improve the environment of the patient. There are currently many organizations and companies out there that are finding new and better ways to treat and fight diabetes. With the new technologies coming and better understanding of the disease and the conditions that cause diabetes, we can only hope that one day diabetes will be a thing of the past.
With more than 27 millions people (whether they know they have it or not) in the United States with diabetes and the third leading cause of death in the United States, we need to develop new and better ways in treating this disease and hopefully one day fine a cure for it.
