Five Centuries later, Christopher Columbus remains a mysterious and controversial figure who has been heralded as a visionary genius and a national hero. Others depict the man as a naive entrepenuer and a remorseless imperialist. The fact that Columbus was the man who discoveredopened the Atlantic slave trade and launched one of the greatest waves of genocide known to man should be enough to cease the ironic "celebration" of Columbus Day. Nevertheless, a large number of people still blindly embrace Columbus Day; traditionally the second Monday of each October in the United States.
In actuality, Columbus did not even set foot on the continent of North America, nor did he prove the world was round. Also, Columbus used and abused countless Indian slaves in an attempt to further his own success. The quotation by an unknown author, which reads, "America's one of the finest countries ever stolen". summarizes the point that Columbus Day should no longer be recognized. Christopher Columbus was a despicable human being, and the celebration of his accomplishments is pathetic. The celebration of Columbus Day in the United States is odd considering Columbus did not even discover the country. Contrary to popular belief, Native Americans had constructed vast civilizations with a population ranging in the millions.
How could a country go undiscovered while being home to millions of people? The answer is it cannot. The answer is it cannot..
