In both the story and the movie the characters who had been wronged take revenge on the person who wronged them. Through careful planning and infiltrating into the lives of their betrayers Montressor and Edmond Dantes get close to their enemy. After gaining the trust of Fortunato, Montressor takes his revenge in one swift blow by sealing him alive in the catacombs underneath his house.

While Edmond Dantes make his revenge slow and painful to his betrayer by making him lose everything he holds dear little by little.
