In Henrik Ibsens's play, "A Doll's House' past actions can not be escaped. The character Krogstad's past actions have a great impact on his life. A secret past has affected the character Nora's life. Dr. Rank's past is the result of his father's past actions. In Henrik Ibsen's play "A Doll's House'; past actions of the character Krogstad have influenced his life. Krogstad committed a crime in his past.

He signed someone else's name and is still paying for this crime. The other characters see him as a liar and a cheat. They do not trust Krogstad and this effect his present life because he wants to keep his job at the bank, but Mr. Helmer, the head of the bank, will not let this happen. He says; "he forged someone else's name. Have you any idea what that means?' (Ibsen's "A Doll's House' pg. 194).

This proves that what Krogstad did was frowned upon and will affect him in keep his job at the bank. The other characters do not trust him or trust him with their affairs. The character Nora is concerned by her past she is trying to hide. Nora committed the same crime as Krogstad. She forged her fathers name on a loan, but did so to save her husband's life. Her husband was terribly ill and had to go to a warmer climate.

At the time they didn't have the money to go and Nora's husband was too proud to borrow money, so she took matters into her own hands by taking out the loan with he fathers signature. Nora's husband thought she got the money from her father and is unaware of how she really obtained it. This secret has now come back to haunt her because the guy that gave her the loan was Krogstad and he is aware of how she forged her fathers signature. Nora is having problems making the payments and krogstad makes her a deal. When Nora fails in carrying out the deal Krogstad threatens her by saying; "Once the first domestic explosion is over...

I've got a letter in my pocket addressed to your husband-' (Ibsen's "A Doll's House, pg. 208). This proves that Nora's past secret has come back to torment her. Her husband does not know how she really got the money and Nora now has to face this secret. The past actions of Dr. Rank's father have influenced his son's past. Dr. Rank's father was horrible man. He had many sexual relations with many women.

Dr. Rank's father passed this him, giving him a horrible disease. Nora tells her friend about Dr. Rank's past when her friend makes a comment about his low spirits. Nora answers her by saying; "But he's got a terrible disease- he's got spinal tuberculosis, poor man. His father was a frightful creature who kept mistresses and so on. As a result Dr. Rank has been sickly ever since he was a child. ' (Ibsen's "A Doll's House', pg. 197) This proves that Dr. Rank's past is a result of what his father has done in his own past.

Dr. Rank has been ill since he was young and in the present, his past of illness is still effecting him. Past actions can be forgotten for awhile but they always come back to haunt the person. Secrets have a way of getting out and eventually will be revealed. The actions of people affect their own present and future along with their loved ones lives.
