He kept on pulling on the fishing line and giving it slack. For a few moments, they all thought that the fish mighty be dead, but after he got off of the line they knew that Mr. Johnson had messed up and let the a great fish get away. The second fish that Mr. Johnson snagged was a black marlin. He fought and fought with the fish until his arms went numb. After a couple of minutes, the fish took the rod, the real, and the line. Harry wanted Mr. Johnson to pay for the tackle that he lost, but Mr. Johnson ran off without paying.
After all of his troubles with Mr. Johnson, Harry went to Donovan's and had a drink, and purchased a drink for Frankie. Frankie called himself a businessman, and he would always say 'Me Frankie; much politics. ' Frankie set it up so that Harry and a guy named Mr. Singer could meet to talk about a new job for Harry. They meet at the Perla.
Mr. Singer was a nice looking Chink. He wanted to know about Harry's boat and how much cargo it could carry. Harry told Mr. Singer that he could carry one hundred and sixty five cases. Mr. Singer wanted Harry to charter him the boat and he did not want Harry to be on the boat when it arrived, but Harry had objections to that. He said that he went on the boat wherever it went. Harry would also have to take a dozen compatriots on the boat with him.
Late that night Harry went to pick up the shipment. When they meet up with Mr. Singer he told Harry that he would get twelve hundred dollars if he did the job right. They loaded the cargo, boarded the boat, and sailed out into the ocean. On this trip Harry also carried along Eddy, the rummy, with him. When they got out to sea, Harry took out his Winchester 30-30 and shot Mr. Singer. After he shot him, he threw him overboard.
Harry headed back toward land to unload the cargo. He also let Eddy off the boat, because he was shocked that Harry had killed Mr. Singer and he was afraid that Harry might try to kill him too. After a couple of months had passed, a guy by the name of Bee-lips had another job for Harry. It was to ship someone liquor.
After they had gotten through with all their planning, Harry went to the house. He told his wife Marie that he had to make another trip, and he wanted her to wake him before daylight; so she did. The day after he had his job, he went to Freddy's place. While he was there' Bee-lips came in and told him that customs had just went out to take his boat.
Harry got that kill look in his eyes and he got very mad at Bee-lips. After Bee-lips and Harry had a few words, Harry asked Freddy what shape his boat was in. He said that it was in great shape. Harry wanted to know if Freddy would charter her for a trip across. Freddy was not going to do it unless they put up the money that the boat was worth.
Harry said that he would give him twelve hundred bucks up, and Freddy agreed to use his boat. That afternoon he went back home to his wife and kids. He did not have any sons, only daughters. He would always say 'Those girls aren't much, are they?' His wife did not think so either. They were all in the same room, and he made the girls leave the room to that he and Marie could talk. Harry made Marie go get his gun because he did not know what all would happen on this boat trip.
After she got his gun, he told them all goodbye and drove away. The next day at Freddy's a man and women with the last name of Laughton sat down and had a few drinks. A few moments later, Richard and Helen Gorden came in to talk to the Laughton's. Mrs. Laughton was talking about how dreamy Harry Morgan was. For some reason Helen got up and left when she was talking about Harry. Harry did not know that the next time he saw Richard Gorden would be the last time that he would ever see another human being.
That night Richard and Harry went to board Freddy's boat. When they got on the boat someone shot Harry in the stomach. Marie and his daughters were waiting at the marine Hospital. While they were waiting the doctor came up to Marie, and she asked if she could see him. He said that Harry was still in the operating room, and that she could not see him yet. Marie took the girl's home and then came back to the hospital.
When she got back, the doctor meet her on the porch of the hospital. The only thing that the doctor said was, 'He's gone, Mrs. Morgan. '.
