Nicotine enters the body and is transported to the brain; chemically, it stimulates the brain to produce more adrenaline, which in turn gives the body a surge of energy. One the effects of nicotine lessen, the brain functions are disrupted and therefore it counter acts by sending out signals to obtain more. The craving for the same level of adrenaline during nicotine activity can only increase and thus becomes an addiction.

In the working cell cycle, cells that are incorrectly produced or are damaged will end up in the stage of apoptosis or cell death. Over a long duration of cigarette smoking the person will develop complications in the lung cells as well as other cells in the body due to the chemicals interaction with the body. The malfunctions of these cells will lead to breakdown of the organ as a whole. This will lead to the person's death.
