Civil Engineering Profession example essay topic
They should be competent, mass oriented and environmentally concerned. It's a profession that is not visible but their roles take part in our day-to-day activities. Examples- the clean water that comes out of faucet, you drive on the road designed by civil engineers, the bridge we crossed, the power from electric circuit as we switch on the television- there is an engineer behind it. It is a must that in building anything, you need a civil engineer to be responsible for the project and also the execution of it. A civil engineer can also work in public companies related to his field.
It is quite large the number of areas that you can work. You can work with the public transportation system, also the water supply, the public projects of sewer, public projects for popular habitation and public areas. Civil engineering structures are incomparable because of its unique configuration such as extensive bridges, urbane dams, and magnificent buildings. As an engineering student, it is well known that these structures built are not possible to neither recover its errors nor improve the design.
It is a one-time shot that can no longer be modified unlike other professions that could have pre-testing of the prototype. Being a civil engineer is not an easy task compare to other professions because it is hard to cope up with great responsibility that it concerns. The civil engineer will be held responsible for the structure built whenever there are imperfections on the construction. Moreover, they can be accountable for their profession, since they work out in the public.
They cannot be excused for whatever failure he has done. Civil engineer's work must be well prepared and completed. Seeing all the good sides of civil engineering makes it sound good as a profession, but everything has its negative nature. Though civil engineering is highly demanded in our society, there are several issues to be discussed regarding the well-being of civil engineering professions. For the last few years, our country has been suffering in almost every aspect, politically, economically, and socially; all of which signals negative outputs for business investments and project budgets. Everyone got affected with the unstable condition in the Philippines.
There have been less demands for civil engineers, since road projects has been discontinued, especially government budget has tighten due to value allocations. Civil engineering profession slowly died down, sooner causing a decline in their well-being. We must do something about the welfare of this profession, since; there has been a negative image problem that struggles deep within every civil engineer. When a profession is in bad publicity, career-suffering profile affects the professionalism because they cannot feel fulfillment in what they do. Not only that, nowadays, people see engineers as greedy developers. I think a lot of people does not have a clear idea of what engineer does, which made them to have pessimistic criticism.
Secondly, future engineers gets discouraged to pursue their interest because of low salary returns, comparing to other professions. What is the cause of all these? There are cases where engineers left the firm they work with and establish his own firm which created a price war that ends up to a low-price professional service. In our country where economy has been depressed for years, people needing engineering services tend to be satisfied for what is less than for the quality.
Lastly, civil engineers suffer for fewer job security and employment benefits. It is untrue in a profession that money involvement does not always count. Picturing the big idea, low salaries vaguely implies an attitude of low self-worth and of powerless. Civil engineering is not just an any job; it is a licensed profession to deserve great work opportunity and demand. Eventually all these factors have lost opportunity for our civil engineers, which causes many to discontinue due to, limited demand for their profession. Subsequently, our country still produces a lot of graduates of good civil engineers.
Even though we have a number of good engineer professionals, most of them migrated to other countries. Since they felt deprivation here in the Philippines, many thought of seeking better opportunity abroad. One of the main reasons is to have good financial resources and benefits for their welfare. These in fact is the reality that we should not be awkward to engage in, because a problem should be openly discuss to seek clarification to fight this professional crisis.
Unfortunately, instead they contribute development in the Philippines; other countries have enjoyed the fruits of our great engineers. There are solutions in protecting the welfare of civil engineering community but the problem lies on the application. The practice of civil engineering must be of good morals and conduct. They should know the real meaning of professionalism in that way, bad competition and price war should play down.
Competition should just comprise of updated knowledge about new technology and techniques. False statements about other engineers should be eradicated; unnecessary comments may bring unhealthy competition. Profession reflects your training, knowledge, and application of principles and ethics. These basics are the easiest way to protect the well-being of this profession. Our main objective is to contribute to the betterment of this profession and prove us in the community with remarkable achievements. The focus remains for the public safety and benefit.
We need to meet higher level of education and put ethics in practice. One must concentrate on continuing improvement for the field. As the world changes, the practice of civil engineering itself is changing, as many areas of specialization have emerged. Every Filipino engineer should practice professionalism by performing excellently on the job, and for the good of all mankind. One must gain public trust in his every action. It is of challenge for civil engineers to balance everything by quality control with their jobs.
These mean that we must neglect safety precautions of every project at hand which may put public safety in question. All of these could resolve our problem, this needs full cooperation and effort from the civil engineering society, and then it is a sure way to achieve from these endeavors. A civil engineer does his work because he enjoys it, rather than putting someone else down. Every good act leads to acceptance in the community and, this shall contribute to a high profile of the profession.
Having all these, brings about success and respect in the community that in turn gains personal satisfaction, financial fulfillment and public appreciation for services well rendered. These accomplishments benefit the engineering community at large; it enhances the credibility of everyone with equal training and capability. So as the Philippines produces great number of licensed engineering professionals, hopefully our supply of competent engineers will attract technological investments to our economy. Also, they would be a valuable asset in serving the needs of the public.
