According to the syllabus, this course is to addresses how an effective oral presentation is developed and delivered and to help students acquire strategies for overcoming speaker's anxiety and gaining confidence. Personally, I was very impressed on the first night of class, as the instructor had a different spin on conducting the class. I found it quite unusual but interesting to start the class off drawing a pictures and putting your dream, goals and visions on paper. My first thoughts were; we are in college not elementary school, but as the class went on it became more interesting. I realize when you put things on paper; your mind takes you to a place where you can envision your dream. In 1996, Robert Kelly's hit single 'I Believe I Can Fly' was the inspiring theme for the movie 'Space Jam'.

It flew to the top of the radio charts upon the movies' release. This is a song that should be part of every sheet music library! (web). the goal was to draw what we plan on doing after school; you know like to plan my vision, my destiny. As the students sat in class and listened to each one of us explain what was on the drawing, the more people began to feel comfortable and get involved. What I got out of the first day of class is that listening is not just being courteous and polite, but you can learn a great deal by listening. People who listen are trusted more than those who grab the talking stick and barge straight into chatter.

I know for certain if you listen first to others, then your credibility with them (and with other listeners) will go up. Usually one is perceived as competent, capable and working with others rather than against them. Good leaders are good at listening and good listeners are seen as potentially good leaders. As this next few weeks draw near, I know the primary focus will be on learning to speak extemporaneously or conversationally for maximum impact.
