It was all the beginning of a new year for one high school called T.C. Williams had many changes done to it. In Virginia high school football is king. It is a way of life, an institution revered and venerated, each game celebrated more lavishly than Christmas, each playoff distinguished more grandly than any national holiday. And with such recognition, comes powerful emotions. In Virginia in 1971 high school football was everything to the people of Alexandria. But when the local school board was forced to integrate an all black school with an all white school, the very foundation of football's great tradition was put to the test.
When Herman Boone (DENZEL WASHINGTON), a young black coach new to the community was hired as head coach of the T.C. Williams High Titans over Bill Yeast (WILL PATTON), a white man with several years seniority and a steadfast following, would the honor of the game win out over racism? There are three types of coaching styles. Command (the dictator), submissive (the babysitter), cooperative (the teacher). From the movie I would say that that there is a little bit of everyone of those in this film. Coach Boone was the dictator. He was on the guys all of the time about having heart, leadership, and how to do things to perfection.
The only way was the right way he said. Get to know each member of the team. Help each other. Treat everyone the same. Teach respect. Teach tolerance.
Model what you want. This is something he said during the summer camp when they went away. This movie is a great film to show to all teams. Another one of Coach Boone's famous saying was, "We will be perfect in every aspect of the game". He stressed this to his players. Helping athletes become responsible and independent is one thing that I can see from this coach.
What makes a good coach is knowledge of the sport, motivation, empathy, coaching philosophy, and asking yourself. What kind of coach am I? Evaluating yourself as a coach and players on ability is one thing that should be done on all aspect of the game. Developing communication skills with your players is something that no other team can take away. Learning how to listen to one another is key.
Improving your listening skills is something that everyone in the world today needs to work on. As a coach probably the most important thing is how you present yourself as a model in front of your team. This film has a major influence on a coach and his team. Remember the Titians!
