Colony Of Social Change example essay topic
The colony Virginia was found by the London Company in 1607 to make money for its investors and to find a route to the Indies. Because Settlers were threatened with abandonment if they didn't find gold or success, the settlers spent too much time searching for the gold, which wasn't there. When the colonists realized this, they knew their ultimate purpose was now to survive. They soon learned how to grow their own crops from the Indians and eventually John Rolfe discovered tobacco, which soon became their main crop. Virginia used indentured servants to grow their tobacco. Near the end of the seventeenth century Virginians turned to African slaves for labor.
There were three hundred blacks in the colony in 1650; blacks were 14% of the population by the end of the century. Colonists from Carolina also came to America for economic purposes. Carolina was founded by eight nobles in 1670, originally this colony's purpose was to trade with the sugar cane islands of the west Indies. They exported rice to the West Indies. Along with rice they exported Indians to the Indies. The Indian enslavement eventually stopped because the Indians moved to the Pennsylvania area, because the founder of Pennsylvania promised better relations with whites and the Indians.
As time went they specialized in rice, which required many laborers. Since Carolina was a plantation colony, the planters needed workers. Therefore, blacks from Africa became slaves in the colonies through importation from the West Indies. Georgia was founded by James Oglethorpe in 1733 as a buffer between Spanish Florida and the Carolinas. It was so important for defense that England sent money to Georgia to support it.
Along with being a buffer, it was a safe place for debtors. Later the money and support declined and eventually stopped. To make up for the loss of pounds, this colony became a colony of plantations to grow corn and cotton. They used African slaves to do their work, and blacks dominated the region around it. The Carolinas, named after Charles II, also had political purposes. This colony was created as the first restoration colony.
It marked the restoration of the monarchy, and it showed the political power of Charles II. Politically, it changed because the colony started out a huge plantation colony, but in 1712 it separated from North Carolina. Maryland was established for social purposes and not only that it was also a safe haven for Catholics. In England Roman Catholics were being prosecuted so setters went to America to practice their religion. But Along with Catholics, Protestants moved settled in Maryland. Protestants resented the Catholics.
But then the Act of toleration was passed in 1649, it granted toleration to all Christians. North Carolina was founded by the Virginians and it too had was established for social Purposes. This colony was mainly inhabited by squatters whose purposes were to get land so they could have small family farms. Socially they changed America because they were outsiders since they were squatters who had no place to land.
The colony of Georgia was also a colony of social change. Georgia was a safe place for debtors. In Georgia, all Christians except Catholics enjoyed religious toleration Religious missionaries came to work along with the debtors and Indians and one of them was John Wesley who later returned to England and found the Methodist church. As you can see the colonies had diverse purposes and their sole purposes changed overtime in the early years of settlement. Why were these purposes and changes important? These events through the purposes and changes helped shaped the American society.
Probably the most important aspect was how helped shaped it economically. It introduced tobacco to the world and helped the colonists survive. Also, through the purposes and changes it helped out food supply for America and later on the world. It made farming more expandable and saved many people lives. Finally consider this, if these colonies were never established for their original purposes and if the colonists never changed their purposes would any of us be here or would be able to practice our religious beliefs?
