An adventurous man named Christopher Columbus has mad many successful voyages, but one is the most important of all time. Columbus was trying to find a short sea route to the Indies. His plan was to sail 2,400 miles west along the latitudes of the Canary Islands, to reach a group of islands near Japan. There the explorer planned to establish a trading city where the products of the East and the West would be exchanged. He had a hard time selling his simple plan. Columbus was equipped with three ships; there were the Santa Maria and the two smaller vessels, the Pinta and the Nina. The Santa Maria was manned by forty men, the Pinta by twenty six men, and the Nina by twenty-four men. Columbus and his men left Palos Spain August third. Nine days later they reached the Canary Islands. The ships left San So bastian on September, sixth.
He had fair trade winds and smooth seas most of the way. It was October tenth when the Crew decided to sail for three more days and if they didn't fins any land they were turning back. At two A.M. they sighted an island, which Columbus named San Salvador. On October twelfth, the same day, Columbus landed on the beach at Fernandez Bay and found a New World. Columbus seems to think that it is an island of the Indies, near Japan or China. He also thinks that the natives are Indians.
The ships stayed a few days before heading to Boni a Bari ay, Cuba. Columbus seems to think this is a part of China. They explored ten or twelve harbors, and sent men up-country to Holguin in hope that the native city was Peking, so that they could present a letter to the emperor of China. They couldn't find an emperor but the did find a few natives. From Cape Mais i the crew crossed the Windward Passage and sailed along the north coast of the island of Hispaniola.
The place reminded Columbus so much of Spain that he named it E panola or in English terms Little Spain. On Christmas Eve the Santa Maria was wreaked on a reef in the Republic of Haiti. The local chief helped save the cargo and he seemed very friendly. Columbus decided to leave forty men to search for gold.
Columbus then started home on the Nina sailing from Saman a Bay on January 16, 1493. He took several Indians with him that he captured.
