Comedy And Tragedy example essay topic
By definition the comedy and tragedy are opposite ends of the spectrum of human emotion. Comedy being associated with the positive aspects, happiness, laughter, joy; while tragedy is associated with the negative aspects, revenge, hatred, sadness etc. It is here that the author makes his first error in his article. Rather than discussing the basis of these emotions he simply glosses over them, stating that an acceptable theory is yet to be provided that can succinctly answer why we laugh and why we cry. Furthermore he offers that those that would like to further their understanding, to visit a library "where one would find any number of dusty dissertations".
By bypassing this important topic I feel that the author is potentially avoiding information that might be of interest to the reader. I also suspect that some of this information may have been contradictory to the authors main arguments. To his credit however, Gracia does, however offer to distinguish between the sad and the funny. We laugh, claims the author because we see in it "the significance of the insignificant, while we cry because through it we grasp the insignificance of the significant". Not a new concept states Gracia, given that we are so often faced with both emotions on a regular basis. This simple statement is the core of Gracia's argument.
By stating this, he is necessarily saying that laughter derives from a new perspective on ourselves. One that illuminates, idiosyncrasies, customs and peculiarities which are given minimal attention during day to day activities, but which have great significance. Comedy draws on these factors to identify the ordinary as extraordinary. Thus Seinfeld lives up to its moniker 'a show about nothing'. The show necessarily underscores that the commonplace is indeed pertinent, this is reinforced by the audience being aware of the significance of what is happening while the shows characters remain in the dark. Conversley the author argues that sadness in respect to laughter is the opposite.
That is, it originates from the significant, and it is a degree of insignificance encapsulated within these 'tragedies' that elects sadness. Or as the author aptly describes it, 'shattering what we hold dear'. Tragedy deals with larger than life characters, villains, heroes and gods whose priorities differ from us mere mortals, whose world in comedy and tragedy is turned upside down. Reversing our priorities and values and eliciting an alternate view of life. I found Gracia's article to be well constructed. His main argument, that the significant is contained in the insignificant and vice versa is compelling and correlates well with his interpretation of the comedy and tragedy.
Some of his arguments I believe focused too heavily on what humour and sadness are to comedy and tragedy as apposed to real people. However, his main arguments parallel to Seinfeld is accurate and informative.
