For one thing, Public schools might have spent less time preparing their students for tests in comparison to private schools. Our group also observed that since private schools weren't accounted for in the national average, it would be hard to fairly compare scores with Hawaii.
We thought that if there was a Private school classification for national averages we could compare it to that of Hawaii. We also noted that when enrolling into a private school, you must pay tuition and may even need to gain acceptance into that school. This known fact gave us the impression that certain schools will accept the more advanced or smarter students, therefore making them more likely to score higher on their tests. Also, we thought that private and independent schools would be more likely to prepare students for such tests as the SAT and ACT, also making them more likely to score higher. Personal Reaction: The factor that I wondered about most considering the use of statistics in the article was how the comparison of test scores was not a fair one. As our group discussed the many reasons for it being unfair, I wondered how the scores could even be compared.
My thoughts were: "how could the national average be compared to Hawaii averages when schools weren't classified the same?" I feel that the study would be a fairer one if there was an average for both the nation and Hawaii accounting for public, private, and independent schools. If the schools were classified the same, then, and only then could we observ.
