Where teachers in that field know what the lecturing teacher is talking about, so they only have to decipher what they are trying to say. When the teacher get in to a classroom with students, the students have to try and learn the material and try to understand what the teacher is trying to say. This leads to problems wit comprehension on the student's part, of the materials. Some professors don't even come to Universities with the intention of being a good teacher, but work under the "publish or parish" aspects.
These Professors are not the most qualified people to be able to teacher students, and don't give student the attention they come to need. Problems that may occur Problems that may occur from the language conflicts are, the student might not understand the material. If the student does don't get the require information from the course, it causes confusion, frustration of both parties, and might lead to the student dropping out of a class they might have enjoyed. But In truth the whole class can be left in the dark on the whole subject. Which may lead to a higher failing rate of the class. Some teachers' use a curve to even out the pass / fail rate, but it only cheats the students out of learning every bit of information out of the class. When students and teachers become frustrated, it only adds to the complications of teaching and understanding the course materials. Frustration is what going to cause the teachers and students, not to have a reasonable fun time with learning information from the course. Frustration only then adds more confusion on the subject, because the mind gets all jumbled with random thoughts and concerns about the subject.
When there is frustration in the classroom the teacher can't teach and the student can't learn or comprehended material. When you are constantly confused and frustrated, it may cause the student to drop the class. The main reason for students to drop classes is that they are receiving a less then adequate grade in the course, and have no chance of saving it no matter what they do. It is a shame that students are put in this situation, where they lose their money for the course and their time they spent in the course, because of some aspect of miscommunication between the teacher and the student. Ways in receiving help There are ways for students to receive help at the University of Michigan Dearborn (U of M D) like, office hours, friends, Internet, books, course tools, and tutoring. But mostly students rely on the teacher to help them learn the material covered in the classroom.
Office hours are a good thing to have available for students. It gives the students a chance to go one-on-one with the teacher and asks certain questions that this particular student needs help with. This method is proven to help students a great deal. Teachers find it easier to communicate with students on a one-on-one base. The teacher and student are in a more relaxed environment, which gets ride of any frustration that might come from in a classroom atmosphere. It is a shame that most students don't take advantage of this resource.
Most students rely on their friends or fellow classmates for help, which is encouraged by all colleges. The groupthink process results in one or two people in the group helping out everyone else to understand the concepts that are troubling. This process is the most effective and most used among college level students. But if no one understands the material, there is no person to learn the concepts from.
Books, course tools, and Internet sources are also a very helpful tool to use, in learning classroom material. All of these sources have their drawbacks. Internet sources can be man up by a person who does not understand the material, and some of the information can be bias. This could lead to learning faulty materials, causing bad test grades. The corresponding course books can also be a good tool to help learn the material.
If the books author uses somewhat of a confusing language it might just lead to more frustration with the subject. If the class also contains course tools software that corresponds with the subject, it can also be a useful tool to use. Tutoring is probably the most successful tool that students have access to. It gives the student a chance to have a one-on-one learning section with a person other than your teacher. The tutor will be able to help smooth out some of the problems the student is having trouble with, in a controlled environment.
This peaceful atmosphere lets you focus on the material at hand with minimum frustration. Student Suggestion Most students would like to have teachers with English as a second language to take a test of some kind, which would test their English skills. This should be added to the hiring processes to that ensure students have the best resources possible at their disposal. Other students would just like the University to hire just teachers that good English. But every one believes that the hiring process needs to be changed in some ways, to create a better learning atmosphere. Proposed Solutions The hiring board should stop hiring teachers that are not fluent in speaking English.
If they want to hire a person that has English as a second language, they should be tested on the use and comprehension of the language. If they do not receive a 80% or higher on the exam they should have to take some English courses to better help them understand and speak the English language in a classroom type atmosphere. The University should have lecture annually to constantly evaluate teacher's performance in the classroom, under actually teaching conditions. Have faculty meetings on how to improve, communication and understanding between students and EASY faculty members.
Conclusion Teacher with English as a second language are always going to be teaching in schools systems around the United States, so we as a school system need to find ways to help make the learning process understandable.
