The Missouri Compromise tries to make some type of balance within the states of north and south. Because of the 3/5's compromise, the states in the south would get proper representation, but when the state of Missouri came in, there was controversy on what this state is considered, and how we would maintain equality. In the Compromise, Missouri is admitted as a slave state and Main as a free state. Also stated in this was every state north of 36 degree 30 minute parallel, was a free state with the exception of Missouri.
And the other way around as well, south of this parallel are all slave states. This is later thought to be only a delay on the Civil War. When we received the land that was purchased from Napoleon, there were no distinct boundaries up north, therefore we said we had claims far north and the British said they had claims farther south. With the U.S. -British Boundary Settlement, both of the countries came to terms with each other and used some sense in resolving this problem. Not only was it peaceful at this point, they also said to share Oregon Country mutually, showing that we were willing to share and do an agreement later. The purchase of Florida was a proving point that countries started respecting us more and more, they were willing to come to terms with us as opposed to try and ignore or just look down on us.
And the Monroe Doctrine was another example of the USA showing they are becoming a significant country in the world, we prove to come to terms. We agree to no more interference in Europe's affairs as long as they stay out of ours and we forbid more colonization. Because of all the revolutions going on in South America, the US's influences are beginning to spread, also showing our significance. Henry Clay developed the American System that would help the Americans profit greatly. It would start with a strong banking system that allowed people to have easy and abundant credit. A tariff was passed to help the eastern manufacturing to flourish.
Because of the money this tariff would bring in, it would allow the third part of the System, a network of roads and canals. Nationalism was something that affected many of the parts of America, from the military to the jobs to the inspirations of painters and such. The Nationalism was lacking in the actual war that was fought earlier, but made up for after the war. Because of all this, the era of good feeling came about. Although a bit of a misnomer, wasn't all that "good".
There was some prosperity and certainly some good strides however we see sectionalism becoming more of a factor between the north and the south, and because of this fast escalating separation, it implies a controversy.
