514 words
Nothing symbolizes modern life better than the computer. For better or worse, computers have infiltrated every aspect of our society. Today computers do much more than simply compute: supermarket scanners calculate our grocery bill while keeping store inventory; computerized telephone switching centers play traffic cop to millions of calls and keep lines of communication untangled; and automatic teller machines (ATM) let us conduct banking transactions from virtually anywhere in the world. Soon every device known to man, including the human body, will use some type of computer to help it function.

We depend on computers for so much of what we do today, that they have become common place. Computers are an essential part of everyday life, they are quickly becoming as common as owning a car, television, or telephone. Our future in the computer age not only impacts Technologists or Scientists anymore. We all need to have computer knowledge. Computers are already being utilized in our homes, schools and businesses. We use them in our homes for everything from entertainment to personal finance.

Children today, learn computing skills in grade school, but businesses are by far the largest users". To be successful today, it is crucial to have knowledge and understanding of computers and their uses". (Shelly Cashman) author of Discovering computers 2001. We are living in exciting times and the world is ever changing. There is no where technology can go, but forward, and this is happening at a lightening rate of speed.

If we take a brief look at history, some 5000 years ago, man was using the abacus to count and calculate. 500 years ago, Guttenberg's printing press was developed. This had a profound impact on literacy. Just 60 years ago, the first electronic digital computer was made, although I think most of us did not become familiar with the idea of a computer until the 1980's.

Now with a click of a button, we can instantly calculate, formulate, research, write a paper, play cards, talk to our friends, family, and instructors. We can even find a date. It is difficult to imagine where we will be in just 20 years from now. In conclusion; as a non-traditional student, having very little computer experience, I feel it is very important for college students to have at least three hours of computer science. Most freshman students I have spoken with, have told me they are already familiar with the different concepts we will learn about in this class and also in the Business 229 course. I can only speculate that in a few years, we will be such a computerized world that it will probably be mandatory for incoming freshman college students to already have these skills.

The World Wide Web has already had a huge impact on the future of education. Someday soon we may no longer attend college courses on a campus anymore. Today and in the future, we will use computers.
